Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - A.J. Jimenez raced home on Ryan Goins' one-out RBI double in the bottom of the ninth, giving the Lansing Lugnuts (23-34; 49-77) a 4-3 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps (33-25; 76-52) on Tuesday night at Oldsmobile Park.
It was the Lugnuts' second walk-off win of the season. The first, coincidentally, came on April 19 against West Michigan, thanks to a Jimenez sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth.
Lansing had brought a 3-2 lead to the top of the ninth, only to see Luis Salas lead off the frame with a game-tying home run off Yorman Mayora.
Jimenez led off the home half by drawing a walk from Whitecaps reliever Jade Todd (0-1). After Kenny Wilson popped out a bunt attempt, West Michigan pulled Todd in favor of Erik Crichton. A Chris Emanuele infield single moved Jimenez into scoring position. Goins promptly followed with a line drive down the left field line, his first hit in five at-bats in the game.
Mayora (7-3) notched the win for Lansing, giving the relief pitcher the second-highest victory total on the team.
Billy Nowlin went 3-for-4 in the losing cause for West Michigan, drilling a solo home run in the sixth inning off Lugnuts starter Chad Beck that gave the visitors a 2-0 lead. Meanwhile, Whitecaps starter Luke Putkonen twirled six shutout innings, scattering four hits while striking out a season-high eight batters.
In the seventh, however, the Lugnuts greeted the incoming Todd with a three-run outburst, capped off by a two-run go-ahead double from Emanuele that set up the ninth inning drama.
West Michigan and Lansing will play the third game of their four-game series on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. at Oldsmobile Park. The Lugnuts' starter is TBA while the 'Caps will throw right-hander Brayan Villarreal (4-4, 2.64).
