New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The New Britain Rock Cats Foundation, the Eastern League baseball club's charitable arm - and Dunkin' Donuts, the world-famous purveyor of great coffee and related treats - today announced the names of the two winners of their jointly-awarded 2010 Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. Each is a Connecticut resident and will receive a $2,500 scholarship to the higher education institution of their choice.

The two annual recipients - one male, one female - have just graduated from Nutmeg State secondary schools; and each has displayed an exemplary and consistent blend of academic, athletic, and community-enhancing activities. This year's winners - Katherine Olson Bowen of Newtown, CT and Patrick Davis Hampton of Farmington, CT - were selected from a large pool of very worthy 2010 applicants. Both Katy Bowen - a graduate of Newtown High School in Sandy Hook, CT, and Pat Hampton, a 2010 graduate of Avon Old Farms in Avon, CT, exemplify those beneficial attributes.

The 2010 Scholarship Awards will be presented to Katy and Pat in a pre-game ceremony tomorrow night - July 7th - on the field at New Britain Stadium.

Ms. Bowen, a member of the National Honor Society at Newtown High, was also an outstanding Varsity Basketball and Softball Player for the Nighthawks. A strong competitor and team leader on the athletic fields - she served as Captain of the Softball Team - Katy is also known as a supportive teammate and helpful mentor to younger, less experienced players. She overcame a significant basketball injury - a torn ACL - and returned to lead her softball team to the Conference Championship in 2010. Kate has not yet made a final decision as to what college she will be taking her talents to in September.

Mr. Hampton, a member of the Cum Laude Society at Avon Old Farms, was also a member of the Winged Beavers' Football and Lacrosse teams. Moreover, Pat has a unique musical gift - he is a talented singer who was the only boy from the state of Connecticut selected for the prestigious National Honor Choir. In addition to his academic and athletic pursuits, Pat was a member of Avon's well-regarded a capella singing group, The Riddlers. In the fall, Patrick will take his considerable skills to Johns Hopkins University.

Congrats to both Katy and Patrick!
