New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - New Britain's Kyle Gibson struck out nine in a seven-inning gem but the Reading Phillies rallied late to edge the Rock Cats, 3-1 on Tuesday afternoon.

Gibson engaged in a pitcher's duel with Reading's Michael Cisco. Gibson scattered four hits while limiting the Phillies to one run before leaving the game with a 1-1 tie. He handed the ball over to Loek Van Mil to start the top of the eighth. Van Mil (1-1) allowed back-to-back singles to Rich Thompson and Fidel Hernandez to open the inning. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Spidale. Van Mil issued an intentional walk to Matthew Rizzotti to load the bases before Kevin Mahar lined a single into right field to knock in two runs to put the R-Phils on top for the first time of the game.

The Rock Cats struck first when Juan Portes opened the bottom of the fifth with a double, moved to third on Mark Dolenc's single, and scored on force out grounder by Chris Cates.

Gibson retired 16 of the first 18 batters he faced before allowing two base hits on the sixth to put runners on the corners with two outs. He managed to force Rizzotti to groundout to second to end the inning and keep the R-Phils off the board. In the seventh, Gibson walked the leadoff batter, Mahar, before he served up a double to Cody Overbeck that put Mahar on third. That set the stage for Kevin Nelson's sacrifice RBI to right that tied the game, 1-1.

Cisco (2-4) limited the Rock Cats to four runs and one run and no walks while striking out four. Michael Schwimer notched his 11th save of the season with a scoreless ninth.
