RIVERMEN ACTION LAST WEEK

Friday, April 7, Chicago Wolves 3 @ RIVERMEN 2: Last Friday night at Carver Arena, the Peoria Rivermen dropped a 3-2 decision to the visiting Chicago Wolves. The Rivermen jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to center Gavin Morgan, who notched his 16th goal of the season just 2:07 into the match. The Wolves, though, evened things up at 1-1 at the 14:39 mark of the first on right wing Scott Barney's 28th strike of the year. Chicago then built a 3-1 advantage with two power-play goals in the middle frame. The first one came just 51 seconds into the second period from right wing Justin Morrison, his 22nd of the year, and then left wing Ramzi Abid netted his 32nd tally of the season at the 12:53 mark of the session. The Rivermen got one more goal at 8:07 of the third period from defenseman Tomas Mojzis, his eighth of 2005-06, but it was too little, too late, and the Peoria club lost 3-2. Scott Reid took the loss in net for the Rivermen, turning aside 31 of the 34 shots that he faced. Chicago out-shot Peoria by the count of 34-30. The Rivermen failed to convert any of their three power-play chances into a goal and allowed the Wolves to score on two of that team's seven man-advantage opportunities.

Saturday, April 8, RIVERMEN 5 @ Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 1: The Peoria Rivermen took on the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights last Saturday evening at the Omaha Civic Auditorium and came away with a 5-1 victory. The Rivermen got on the scoreboard first just 1:26 into the game thanks to defenseman Brendan Buckley's second goal of the season. Early in the second period, at the 3:19 mark, Peoria center Mike Zigomanis netted his 12th tally of 2005-06 to put Peoria up 2-0. Zigomanis then extended the Rivermen advantage to 3-0 with his second strike of the contest and 13th of the season at the 8:56 mark of the middle frame. The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights finally lit the lamp at 17:00 of the second session on the second goal of the year by left wing Cam Cunning to make the score 3-1 in favor of Peoria. At the 10:27 mark of the third period, Zigomanis completed a hat-trick with his 14th tally of the campaign, staking the Rivermen to a lead of 4-1. The Peoria club then capped off the scoring in the contest on the 21st goal of the year for right wing Jon DiSalvatore at 18:11 of the third to win 5-1. Chris Beckford-Tseu started between the pipes for the Rivermen and turned aside 24 of the 25 shots that he faced from the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights to record his fifth career AHL victory. Peoria not only won the game, but the club also out-shot Omaha by the count of 38-25. The Rivermen received 10 power-play opportunities on the evening and converted on four of them. The Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, on the other hand, failed to score on six man-advantage chances.

Sunday, April 9, RIVERMEN 4 vs. Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 1: This past Sunday, the Peoria Rivermen and the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights completed a weekend home-and-home series with a match-up at Carver Arena at the Peoria Civic Center, and the Rivermen beat the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights 4-1 to sweep the two-game set. The Omaha club controlled this tilt through the first period, getting an early goal at the 1:09 mark of the frame from defenseman Steve Bancroft, his third tally of the year, and holding Peoria scoreless. The Rivermen got things going in the middle session, though, as winger Cam Keith put in his sixth marker of the season unassisted at 6:30 of the second to tie the score at 1-1. About five minutes later, at the 11:15 mark of the second period, center Gavin Morgan gave Peoria its first lead of the game at 2-1 with his 17th strike of the campaign. The Rivermen advantage then grew to 3-1 at 10:37 of the third session, when rookie right wing David Backes potted his fourth professional goal. At the 12:11 mark of the third period, Peoria got the final goal of the game off of the stick of left wing Peter Sejna. Sejna's 18th marker of the season produced the final score of 4-1 in favor of the Rivermen. Scott Reid patrolled the Peoria crease during this contest and made 24 saves to earn the victory. The shot count for the game ended up at 30-25 for the Rivermen. The Peoria side went one for three on the power play, while the Omaha skaters failed to score on four man-advantage opportunities.

PEORIA WILL PLAY IN THE POSTSEASON!

Although they suffered a 3-2 loss to Chicago last Friday night, the Peoria Rivermen did clinch a spot that evening in the 2005-06 Calder Cup Playoffs. Peoria's postseason berth was solidified by Iowa's 3-2 overtime win in Omaha on Friday. Now that they have secured a place in the playoffs, the Rivermen will wait to find out some time this week their final postseason seeding, which could be either second or third in the West Division. This 2005-06 postseason berth earned by the AHL Rivermen marks a return to the playoffs for the City of Peoria. Prior to last season, when the ECHL Peoria Rivermen missed out on postseason play, the professional hockey team based here in Peoria had qualified for the playoffs for 18 consecutive seasons.

OH, WHAT A NIGHT!

Rivermen center Mike Zigomanis had quite a game last Saturday night in Omaha. His final statistics from the contest included three goals, two assists, a plus-one rating, and 12 shots on goal. Those three goals tied the team record for the most goals scored in one game by one player this season that center Gavin Morgan first established back on Sunday, March 5, at Omaha. The five total points that Zigomanis racked up on Saturday set a new high mark for the most points scored in one game by one member of the Rivermen, breaking the previous record of four shared by several players. In addition, his 12 shots on goal in the tilt not only set a new single-game high in that category for the Rivermen, but also tied the AHL high for shots by one player in one game so far this season.

HAT-TRICK-O-METER

Last Saturday at Omaha, Peoria centerman Mike Zigomanis recorded the second hat-trick ever scored by a member of the AHL Peoria Rivermen. Center Gavin Morgan notched the first hat-trick in franchise history back on Sunday, March 5, also in Omaha. Zigomanis' three-goal game was also the 86th hat-trick scored this season in the AHL.

AN HONOR FOR THE 1990-91 IHL PEORIA RIVERMEN TEAM

The 1990-91 Peoria Rivermen team was inducted into the Greater Peoria Sports Hall of Fame this past Sunday in a ceremony at the Peoria Civic Center. Not only did that squad win the International Hockey League's Turner Cup championship, but it also established a professional hockey record that still stands today with 18 straight wins from October 6, 1990, to November 22, 1990.
