Few professional athletes in any sport have been as admired, respected, and loved as "the gentle giant," Jean Béliveau. Beliveau made the All-Star Team 10times, was the leading scorer of all time for Montreal and the all-time leading scorer in Stanley Cup history as well. After playing a total of five regular season games in 1950-51 and 1952-53, he played another 18 seasons with Montreal, and in 10 of those he led the team as their captain. When he retired from the game, Beliveau said, "I made up my mind to offer my place to a younger player." He added: "It's hard, but I will play no more. I only hope that I have made a contribution to a great game. Hockey has been my life since the day my father gave me a pair of skates when I was five years old."
My Life in Hockey, his long-anticipated autobiography, was first published in 1994. This fully updated edition presents his remarkable life from the perspective of 2005, adding to the detail of the original with timely new chapters, including an intimate account of his battle with cancer and his assessment of the professional game today. He shares his views of the state of the league, the fall-out from a canceled season, and how both the players and the owners have gone wrong.
Jean Béliveau: My Life in Hockey is packed with stories, anecdotes, tributes, and opinions about players past and present from a man many have cited as a much-needed role model for professional sport-a man whose life and career have personified ability and success.
