Peoria Rivermen News Release
Wheeling, W. Va. - The Peoria Rivermen remain without a goal after 120 minutes of hockey over two games at WesBanco Arena this season, losing Saturday night 2-0 to goaltender Dany Sabourin and the Wheeling Nailers in front of 3,351.
The Nailers held the Rivermen to 14 total shots, six in both the first and third periods and two in the second. It was Sabourin's ECHL-leading fifth shutout of the season, which is a Wheeling franchise record and two shy of the ECHL record.
Peoria was shut out 1-0 on 29 shots in Wheeling on Sunday, November 14 by Sabourin and the Nailers.
The Rivermen shut out Wheeling 1-0 at home on Sunday, December 5 on 25 saves by Peoria rookie Chris Beckford-Tseu.
There was no scoring in the third period.
The Rivermen (7-11-3, 17 points) dropped to 3-6-1 on the road and fell to 1-2-1 against the Nailers this season. Wheeling (16-9-0, 32 points) has won four in a row and improved to 9-3-0 on home ice.
Beckford-Tseu (5-8-1) stopped 23 of 25 shots in defeat.
The Nailers took a 1-0 lead on the power play at 11:43 of the opening period. Kenny Corupe broke into the Peoria zone on left wing and fed Mark Kosick in the high slot. Kosick quickly dished the puck off to a speeding Ed McGrane in the right face-off circle for a one-time chip shot into the upper left corner. It was McGrane's eighth tally of the season.
Wheeling made it 2-0 at 5:05 of the second. The Peoria defense collapsed too far to the left-wing boards, allowing Armands Berzins, at the top of the left face-off circle, to find a wide-open Evgeny Lazarev in the slot for a one-time slap shot past an out-of-position Beckford-Tseu. It was Lazarev's fourth goal of the season.
In the second, the Rivermen were held to two shots - including two shot-less power plays, and it was just the second time that had occurred all season long. Peoria was held to two in the first period of a November 16 contest in Reading.
Tomorrow afternoon - Sunday, December 19, the Rivermen take on the Nailers again in the second of two in a row between the clubs at WesBanco Arena. Game time is 4:00 p.m. CT.
