Alaska Aces News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â Joe Talbot tied the game with 49.3 seconds left in regulation, but the ECHL's all-time leading scorer enjoyed the final say in a 5-4 Mississippi overtime win over Alaska before 3,775 Friday night at Sullivan Arena.
Continuing a trend established in its series with San Diego last week, Alaska quickly fell behind, as Kerry Ellis-Toddington blasted a one-timer past Aces goalie Peter Aubry at the 6:25 mark of the opening frame. Mike Scott, who set a Mississippi rookie scoring record in 2003, tied the game eight minutes into the second period by scoring Alaska's sixth power play goal in their last four games. Milt Mastad regained the lead for the Sea Wolves at 2-1 just 20 seconds later, set up by
Louis Dumont, who entered the game with a record 775 points in his 11-year ECHL career.
Trailing after two periods for the fourth consecutive game, Alaska fell further behind as Jay Legault scored at 3:21 of the third just after Mississippi had failed to convert a four-minute power play as a result of Talbot's double minor for spearing. Less than a minute later, Charles Linglet pulled the Aces within 3-2 by roofing a backhander over Sea Wolves goaltender Jason Wolfe. Pat O'Leary pushed the margin back to two goals at 9:57, but again, Alaska refused to go quietly, closing the gap to 4-3 when Cal Benazic's drive from the point trickled off Wolfe's blocker over the goal line with 4:07 remaining. With Aubry having been pulled in favor of the extra attacker, Talbot flicked in a loose puck in front at 19:10 to force overtime and keep the Aces 12-10-2) in a fourth place tie in the West Division.
Dumont gave Mississippi (10-10-2) its third straight road victory by sneaking pack door to chip in a puck coming off the end boards by a beaten Aubry just 56 seconds into OT. The goal sent Alaska to its first-ever loss in overtime after three wins during the 2003-04 regular season and two more in the 2004 Kelly Cup playoffs. The Aces out-shot the Sea Wolves 27-22.
The first 1,500 fans arriving at tomorrow's 7:15 p.m. rematch will receive a stuffed moose, courtesy of the Outdoor Channel, and all fans are encouraged to bring new, plush toys to be thrown onto the ice when the Aces score their first goal. The toys then will be collected and distributed to Anchorage hospitals over the Christmas holiday. Sunday's series finale at 5:05 p.m. offers Xpress Lube T-shirts free of charge to the first 2,000 children ages 12 and under in attendance, and of course, features the KeyBank post-game "Skate with the Aces." GCI also will be giving away 40,000 Alaska Airlines miles.
The final two games of the Mississippi series as well as the home tilts against San Diego December 29 and 31 will be broadcast on flagship station KFQD 750 AM and also made available on a pay-per-view basis at www.alaskaaces.com, courtesy of B2 Networks. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off.
