Mississippi Sea Wolves News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska â In the first-ever meeting between the teams, Mississippi's Louis Dumont scored 56 seconds into overtime to give the Sea Wolves a dramatic 5-4 overtime victory over the Alaska Aces in front of 3,775 at Sullivan Arena.
The Sea Wolves extend their win streak to three and climb back to the 500 mark while improving to 3-1-0 on their season-high road trip. The Aces are now winless in two.
"That was a big win," Mississippi coach Bob Woods said. "We need to clean up a few things. But I liked that we were able to regroup and get the two points. It should be a great remainder of the series."
Mississippi (10-10-2, 22 points) opened the score at 6:25 of the first. Travis Lisabeth dropped a pass for Kerry Ellis-Toddington, who powered a slap shot past Peter Aubry for his fourth of the season. Jay Legault also picked up an assist to extend his point streak to five games.
Alaska (12-10-2, 26 points) got on the board in the second period. Aces' Mike Scott, who played with Mississippi in 2002-03, wired a left point shot at the 8:00 mark through traffic and by Jason Wolfe for a power-play goal. The seventh goal of the season for Scott was assisted by Charles Linglet and Scott Gomez, who is taking time away from the New Jersey Devils to play for his hometown team while the National Hockey League lockout continues.
Just 20 seconds later the Sea Wolves regained their lead. Mississippi's Milt Mastad let go with a right circle shot that found the back of the net to make it 2-1 for Mississippi. Helpers went to Mike Martone and Louis Dumont, who extended his point streak to five games.
Late in the middle stanza, Aces' Joe Talbot speared Legault to draw a four-minute penalty. Seconds after the penalty expired, Legault buried his third of the season to give the Sea Wolves a 3-1 lead.
Charles Linglet narrowed the score to one with his seventh tally of the season at 4:18 assisted by Joe Talbot and Keith McCambridge.
Mississippi went up by a pair once more on the fifth marker of the campaign by Pat O'Leary, who was open at the side. Lucas Drake and Darryl Campbell picked up helpers.
Alaska closed the gap to one, as Cal Benazic scored a rebound with 4:07 remaining in regulation to make it 4-3 for Mississippi.
In the final minute, Aces pulled Aubry for the extra attacker. Talbot scored with 49 seconds left in regulation to tie the score 4-4 and send the game to overtime.
In the extra time, Dumont deposited his sixth goal of the year with a loose puck at the side 56 seconds into overtime to end the game.
Mississippi were unable to convert on three power play opportunities, while Alaska was successful on 1-of-3. Aces outshot the Sea Wolves 27-22.
