Florida Everblades News Release
ESTERO, FL - The Florida Everblades (14-11-1) won their second straight game with a 5-2 victory over the Augusta Lynx (7-15-2) on Saturday night at Germain Arena. Florida pushed Augusta to their seventh straight loss with a pair of goals from Kris Vernarsky and Matt Hendricks.
Augusta opened the scoring eight minutes into the game on Ken Magowan's ninth goal of the season, but the Everblades stormed back with a pair of late first period goals to take the lead for good. Hendricks notched the 'Blades first goal at 13:30 when he fired a wrist shot past Augusta netminder Matus Kostur to tie the game, and Vernarsky converted Florida's third short-handed goal of the season at 15:40 to give the Everblades a 2-1 lead.
That lead held into the third period when the Everblades picked up some breathing room at 5:43 of the final period on Vernarsky's second goal of the night and fourth on the season. The Lynx closed the gap to a one-goal lead midway through the third period when Jim Shepherd slapped home a shot past 'Blades goaltender Craig Kowalski. Florida re-gained their two-goal lead at 15:53 of the third when Brandon Coalter converted a two-on-one goal to give Everblades a 4-2 advantage. The 'Blades sealed the win with an empty net goal by Hendricks with 1:18 remaining in the contest.
Kowalski picked up the win in goal for Florida by stopping 27 of 29 Augusta shots, which brought his record to 9-5-1 overall, and 6-1-1 in his last eight games. Kostur suffered the loss for Augusta allowing four goals on 35 shots, which knocked his record to 2-8-0. The Everblades finished the night 0-for-3 on the power play, while Augusta failed to score on their two power play chances.
Florida returns to action on Tuesday, December 21 when they travel to Pensacola to take on the Ice Pilots at 8:05 p.m. You can hear all of the Everblades action on SportsRadio 770 AM or via internet by visiting www.floridaeverblades.com, www.abc-7.com, and www.nbc-2.com with the "Voice of the Everblades" Kevin Reiter calling the play-by-play.
