Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC â It was another tough loss at the Bear for the Victoria Salmon Kings on Friday, this time it was at the hands of the San Diego Gulls. Nobody likes losing in front of their home town fans especially when they outshoot the opponent.
The 2-1 loss marked the second straight for the Salmon Kings and was especially frustrating for the forwards who just could not get the puck past Gulls netminder Eddy Fehri. Though he was not awarded a star for his performance he was dazzling stopping 34 of 35 shots.
The Salmon Kings were again down to fourteen players a fact that cannot be understated when the team coming into town is dressing a full roster. Coach Bryan Maxwell is getting everything he can from the guys on his bench but by the middle of the third his players are clearly out of wind.
The Gulls opened the scoring at 10:42 of the first period when Sylvain Deschatelets and Andrew Canzanello set up left winger Brian Gornick for his fifth goal of the season. Gornick was left wide open in front and banged the puck past a stranded Jason Stone.
At 5:38 of the second the Salmon Kings power-play struck again, this time it was Ryan Wade with the tying goal, his seventh on the year to knot it up at one.
Less that five minutes later though the Gulls game winner again came off the stick of Gornick who put the nifty backhand high over Stone who was moving from post to post.
As it was with Mississippi, the opener of the three game set against the Gulls, looked as though both teams were content to size each other up. This was the first meeting of these two teams this season. Unlike the rivalry that was rekindled with the Bakersfield Condors a week ago the Salmon Kings and the Gulls took very few penalties and played a relatively safe clean hockey game.
The Salmon Kings came out in the third looking to continue their impressive scoring record in the final frame. They outshot and outplayed the Gulls but were unable to get it past Fehri who was sound in his positioning all night.
The San Diego Gulls and the Victoria Salmon Kings go at it again at the Bear Mountain Arena on Saturday December 18, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available by phone at 220-7777 or online at www.selectyourtickets.com.
