RiverDogs to Celebrate MUSC Heart Transplant Anniversary

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs will pay tribute to the 21st anniversary of the Medical University of South Carolina's first heart transplant during its July 28 game against the Hickory Crawdads.

The RiverDogs, which have a longstanding relationship with MUSC's Storm Eye Institute, will have donor cards and transplant information packets available at the entrance of Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park before and after the 7:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch.

MUSC heart transplant physicians Dr. Adrian B. Van Bakel and Dr. Arthur J. Crumbley will throw ceremonial first pitches along with Bob Ward, a RiverDogs intern from Belmont Abbey (NC) College, who received a new heart from MUSC 2½ years ago.

"What the Medical University has done with heart and other organ transplants over the past two decades is simply amazing and we want to thank them for all of the lives they've saved," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "The Lowcountry is fortunate to have MUSC and its caring doctors and staff members, and this is something we should not take for granted."

All of MUSC's transplant divisions have been invited to the game.

Since its first heart transplant on June 30, 1987, twenty-one years have passed since MUSC became a heart transplant center The heart transplant patient survival rate at MUSC has been among the best of 700 heart centers nationwide. The success rate is reflected in the 92 percent survival rate after one year of transplantation.
