CHARLESTON, SC - Dellin Betances struck out seven batters in his 7.0 innings of work to lead the Charleston RiverDogs past the Hickory Crawdads, 8-1, in South Atlantic League action Friday night in front of 6,311 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the RiverDogs even their second-half record at 16-16 (61-41 overall) while the Crawdads slip to 11-23 since the All-Star break (41-63 overall). Hickory has now dropped their last 10 outings, while Charleston improves to 9-0 mark this season over the Crawdads.

The 6'8" Betances improved his record to 6-3, while allowing one run on four hits and walking only one. He faced 26 batters of which seven flew out and six grounded out to go along with his seven punchouts.

Jesse Hoover threw the eighth inning and fanned one, while Gabe Medina also threw one frame and surrendered one hit.

Charleston scored its first run in their first trip to the plate, when Austin Romine singled home Abraham Almonte, who drew a walk, moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a balk.

The RiverDogs then plated another run in the fourth on Justin Snyder's RBI double to left against starter Michael Felix (4-4), scoring Brandon Laird, who also walked.

Hickory adjusted the 2-0 Charleston lead in the sixth when Greg Picart opened with a double and scored on Matt Hague's RBI double to bring the visitors to 2-1.

But the RiverDogs retaliated with three runs in the sixth, all coming with two outs and no one on base. In the inning, Crawdad reliever Serguey Linares issued three walks, hit one batsman and threw one wild pitch to go along with Charleston's one hit to take a 5-1 lead.

The lone hit came on Austin Krum's bases loaded single up the middle that scored a pair of runs.

The RiverDogs scored three more runs in the seventh on a RBI single by Jesus Montero and a two-run double by Laird.

Charleston recorded eight hits on the night with Montero leading the way with a pair while Laird and Krum each drove home two runs.

Hickory netted five hits total and no one had more than one knock.

Felix lasted only 5.0 innings for Hickory as he allowed two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one. For the game, the Crawdads issued six walks.

Game 2 of this four-game block is set for Saturday with Charleston sending righty Noel Castillo (7-5, 3.35 ERA) to the mound, while Hickory will go with righty Rafael De Los Santos (2-7, 5.22 ERA).
