Sand Gnats drop 8-2 decision to Tourists

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Connor Graham threw six strong innings and the Tourists used a four-run fifth inning to cruise to an 8-2 win before 2,939 at Historic Grayson Stadium on Friday night.

Leading 2-1 in the fifth, Asheville (21-13, 67-37) broke it open off Gnats starter Josh Stinson. Bo Bowman tripled in Michael Mitchell with the first run. After two walks, Kevin Clark knocked in a pair with a single to center off Jose Bierd. A balk from Bierd scored Helder Velazquez to stretch the Tourists lead to 6-1.

Bowman led the Asheville attack, going 3-for-5 with a triple, 2 RBI and 3 runs.

Graham (9-4) earned his fourth win in a row, permitting 1 run on 4 hits in 6.0 innings.

Savannah's best chance came in the eighth. After Greg Veloz tripled and scored to make it 6-2, Sean McCraw doubled with two outs. Francisco Pena and Darren Clark each walked to load the bases. Nick Giarraputo, batting as the tying run, bounced into an inning-ending groundout to shortstop.

Stinson (3-6) was plagued by 4 walks and allowed 5 runs on 4 hits in 4.1 innings.

Veloz was a home run short of the cycle, going 3-for-5. He added and RBI and a run while McCraw added a pair of hits.

The Sand Gnats (14-18, 47-55) and Tourists continue the four-game series at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Sand Gnats will honor South Atlantic League president emeritus John Henry Moss, who was the league president for 50 years. The team will retire the No. 50 uniform before the game in honor of Moss. LHP Mark Cohoon (NR) will make his Sand Gnats debut on the mound while RHP Cory Riordan (7-7, 3.45) will start for the Tourists.
