Hickory Crawdads News Release
Getting away from home didn't solve Hickory's recent losing woes, as an 8-1 defeat to Charleston extended the 'Dads losing streak to 10 in a row. Offense continued to plague the 'Dads, as Hickory (11-23, 41-63) was held to just the one run on five hits: it marked the sixth time in the 10 losses Hickory was held to either one run or fewer or five hits or less and the fifth time both happened in the same game.
Starting pitcher Michael Felix helped keep the game close, despite taking the loss and dropping to 4-4 on the year. In his second start since permanently moving to the starting rotation from the bullpen, Felix allowed two runs on four hits in five innings and would leave the game with Hickory down 2-1.
Charleston (16-16, 61-41), which took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and would not look back, secured the game with back-to-back three-run innings in the sixth and seventh. Austin Krum's two-run single in the sixth and Brandon Laird's two-run double in the seventh helped fuel the rallies.
Meanwhile, RiverDogs starter Dellin Betances lasted seven innings in allowing just one run on one walk and four hits, striking out seven for the win. It was his second win against the 'Dads this year and improved the righty to 6-3.
Hickory's run scored in the top of the sixth, when a Matt Hague double drove in Greg Picart, who had doubled to lead off the frame.
The losing streak is still the longest for the 'Dads since dropping 12 straight June 5-17, 2005. Hickory also has lost 11 straight games against Charleston, going 0-9 this year on top of two losses to end last season. The last time the Crawdads beat the RiverDogs was in a doubleheader sweep in Charleston July 31, 2007.
Hickory looks to snap its slide Saturday night with RHP Rafael De Los Santos (2-7, 5.22 ERA) on the mound against RHP Noel Castillo (7-5, 3.35 ERA).
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Follow the action live with Mike Janela on play-by-play on WMNC 92.1 FM or right here on www.hickorycrawdads.com.
