Jackets Open Road Trip with Win over Braves

Rome, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets (41-28, 23-11) opened an eight game road trip on Friday night against the Rome Braves (22-47, 15-19) with a 2-1 win. Ryan Paul recorded the win in relief and Juan Ciriaco scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

The two teams were locked in a 1-1 tie heading into the top of the ninth inning before Augusta plated a run for a 2-1 advantage. Nestor Rojas connected for a two out single then was lifted for Ciriaco who pinch ran. Garrett Baker then came in to pinch hit for Taylor Creswell and popped a ball up into short left-center field. The ball kicked off the glove of shortstop Chad Lundahl for a two-base fielding error allowing Ciriaco to score.

Paul (4-2) worked three shutout innings in relief while allowing one hit and striking out three.

Andrew De La Garza pitched a perfect ninth inning for his eighth save of the season striking out one.

The Braves scored the first run of the game in the third inning on a two-out RBI single from Cole Miles for a 1-0 lead. Matt Kennelly began the inning with a double off starter T.J. Brewer.

Brewer got the no-decision working five innings and allowing one run on three hits. The right-hander walked three and struck out four.

Augusta tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning when Charlie Culberson drew a two-out bases loaded walk forcing in Shane Jordan.

The GreenJackets and Braves continue their four game series Saturday night with Augusta sending left-hander Craig Clark (6-4, 4.12) to the mound. Rome counters with left-hander Cole Rohrbough (2-3, 6.05). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

The GreenJackets improved to 29-19 on the road.

Augusta won its fifth straight game.

Augusta is 8-0 against Rome this season.

Augusta improved to a season high 25 games over the .500 mark

Angel Villalona extended his hit streak to five games.
