Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston starter Wilkins de la Rosa struck out nine batters in six shutout innings and Jesus Montero blasted a solo home run as the RiverDogs shutout the Lexington Legends, 2-0, in South Atlantic League action Monday night in front of 3,481 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, the RiverDogs improve to 6-11 in the season's second half and 52-35 overall. The Legends fall to 4-14 since the All-Star break and 25-62 on the season.

Monday night's shutout was the 10th of the season for Charleston, the most in the league. It was the first, however, in over one month, since a June 6th 2-0 whitewashing at Savannah.

De la Rosa (4-3), a converted outfielder, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning as the southpaw allowed only two hits and walked none while facing 20 batters. Three relievers scattered a pair of hits as the Legends could muster only four knocks on the night.

The RiverDogs started the game's scoring in the bottom of the second inning when Montero lined a solo home run over the left field scoreboard that came off Legends starter Jeff Icenogle (1-6). It was Montero's eighth round-tripper of the season and came on the first pitch he saw from Icenogle.

Charleston pushed another run across the plate in the third when Dave Williams singled, then moved to second when Austin Krum was hit by a pitch. After a fielder's choice, Justin Snyder lofted a sacrifice fly to left field and Williams raced home with the hosts' second run.

Charleston collected five hits on the night, paced by Williams who went 2-for-2 with a walk. Bradley Suttle, Austin Romine and Montero accounted for the remaining RiverDogs' hits.

Cat Everett, Eric Taylor, Steve Brown and Bryan Brown each recorded one hit for Lexington.

Lexington avoided further damage as they turned four double-plays.

Jesse Hoover, Chase Vacek and Jonathan Ortiz each pitched one inning of relief, and Ortiz earned his 22nd save of the season in the process.

Icenogle, who went six complete innings for Lexington, surrendered both runs on five hits while walking two and striking out seven. He was relieved by Brett Robinson, who threw the last two frames, and walked one while fanning one.

The game marked the first time that Lexington had been to Charleston since the RiverDogs swept the Legends in four games from July 28-31, 2006. The two teams met in Lexington from Aug. 8-11, 2007, with the Legends taking three of four from the RiverDogs.

Game 2 of this four-game series is set for Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. with Charleston sending righty Noel Castillo (7-4, 3.45 ERA) to the hill while Lexington counters with lefty Anthony Bello (2-5, 4.02 ERA).
