Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The BlueClaws missed out on their biggest comeback of the season on Monday night, scoring six runs over the final two innings before falling 7-6 to the Augusta GreenJackets at FirstEnergy Park.
The first-place GreenJackets jumped out to a 7-0 lead after six innings against BlueClaws starter Julian Sampson and reliever Moises Melendez. But the BlueClaws offense came alive in the eighth and ninth inning against the Augusta bullpen to cut the lead to one.
Trailing 7-1 in the ninth inning, the BlueClaws got six straight hits to start the innings, including five against Waldis Joaquin. Alberto Cambero singled off of Andrew DeLaGarza representing the tying run and moved into scoring position after a Nick Noonan throwing error, but could not advance the final 180 feet to send the game to extra innings. DeLaCruz got the final three batters in order to end the ballgame.
The GreenJackets took an early lead with a single run in the first inning and never looked back. Sampson got the first two hitters of the first before walking Garrett Baker and giving up an RBI double to Angel Villalona.
Sampson (5-2) took his first loss since April 20 after giving up three runs in five innings. The right-hander walked two and did not strike out a hitter. Moises Melendez had even more trouble against the Augusta offense, surrendering four runs all with two outs in the sixth inning. He struck out the first two hitters of the frame on six pitches before
Augusta (14-4, 55-32) moved to within one game of Asheville for the best record overall record in the South Atlantic League. Lakewood (10-8, 48-40) fell to three games behind first-place West Virginia in the North Division second half race.
Chance Corgan (2-2) set a new career high with seven innings pitched. The right-hander limited Lakewood to just three hits in that span, striking out four and walking just one.
The BlueClaws finally got on the board with a single run in the eighth against recently-activated reliever T.J. Brewer. Travis Mattair, who finished 3-for-4, doubled to start the inning and was pushed across two batters later by defensive sub Tim Kennelly.
Dominic Brown picked up a double in the ninth-inning rally. The hit snapped a 0-for-3 start and extended his hitting streak to 11 games. He is still chasing his season-high, which was a 14 game streak from May 21 to June 6.
Lakewood will continue their series with the GreenJackets on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park. Jacob Diekman (2-5) will take the mound for the BlueClaws, with right-hander Oliver Odle (6-4) throwing for Augusta.
