Salisbury, MD - Runs came as a premium in the series opener Monday night between the Drive (47-41, 7-11) and Delmarva Shorebirds (47-40, 9-9). But in the 11th inning, the Shorebirds took advantage of two Greenville miscues for a 2-1 walk-off victory at Perdue Stadium.
Tyler Henson began the inning with a lead off single off reliever Javier Garcia (2-1). After a sacrifice bunt by Wally Crancer moved Henson into scoring position, he advanced to third on a throwing error by Mike Jones.
Neither a hit, an error, nor a sacrifice would give the Shorebirds the game-winner. A wild pitch during Pedro Florimon's at bat brought the game to a halt.
Both teams managed one run through regulation as the Drive struck first in the top of the third. Oscar Tejeda and Will Vazquez each doubled to leadoff the inning, accounting for Greenville's only hits until the top of the 11th.
An inning later, the Shorebirds finally pushed a run across to tie the score. Joe Nowicki drew a leadoff walk and scored as Anthony Martinez and Crancer followed with singles.
Both pitching staff dueled it out as the Drive used four hurlers and the Shorebirds used three of their own. Neither starter, Chad Povich of Greenville and Sean Gleason of Delmarva, factored into the decision despite turning in solid performances.
Povich allowed a run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Meanwhile Gleason lasted 8.0 innings, surrendering the Drive's only run on two hits while fanning six.
The duo of Ryne Miller and Felix Ventura combined to hold the Shorebirds scoreless over a 4.1 inning span. Miller allowed two hits and a walk while striking out two in 2.0 innings, while Ventura added 2.1 innings, giving up a hit and a walk with four strikeouts.
The Drive and Shorebirds continue their four-game series tomorrow evening with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Ryne Lawson will toe the rubber for Greenville while Delmarva counters with right-hander Luis Noel.
The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Wednesday, July 16th when the began an eight-game homestand with the Lake County Captains. For more information regarding single-game tickets, ticket plans, group outings and luxury accommodations, visit www.GreenvilleDrive.com or call (864) 240-4500.
