Crawdads fall to Captains

The Lake County Captains, on the strength of strong pitching throughout the game and with the help of two large innings, defeated the Hickory Crawdads 9-2 in the first game of a four game series in Eastlake, OH. The Captains pitching tandem of starter Kelvin De La Cruz (second in the South Atlantic League in ERA), and relievers John Gaub and Jonathan Holt combined to shut down the Crawdads offense striking out 12 hitters and retiring the side in six of the nine innings on the night. Lake County roughed up Crawdads starter Brad Lincoln by scoring seven runs off the Hickory hurler in 5 1/3 innings pitched on ten hits.

After the first three nad a half innings that saw only one base runner for each side reach base, Lake County breached the scoreless tie with four runs in the fourth inning. The Captains opened the inning with six consecutive singles off Lincoln. Adam White led off with an infield hit and moved to third on a single to right by Adam Davis. Roman Pena followed with a single to right, scoring White and advancing Davis to third. Matthew Brown brought in Davis with a single of his own to left, advancing Pena to second base. After Karexon Sanchez loaded the bases with an infield hit, Richard Martinez completed the singles fest with a liner to left, scoring Pena. Lake County added a run as the result of a double play to complete the scoring in the fourth.

Hickory got a run back in the fifth inning as Matt Cavagnaro singled in Ronald Pena , who singled earlier in the frame.

The recent sixth inning jinx continued for Hickory as Lake County added five more runs to open the game up. Roman Pena led off with a single, moved to second on a Lincoln wild pitch, went to third on a fly out and scored on a single by Sanchez. Sanchez stole second and scored on a single by Martinez, bringing Lincoln's night to a close.

Wanell Macia was brought in for Lincoln and promptly surrendered a two run home run to the first batter he faced, Mark Thompson. Lake County added one more run in the inning with the help of an error by 3B Danny Bomback to complete the scoring.

Hickory added a late run in the eighth as Matt Hague doubled in Greg Picart to bring the score to its final 9-2 conclusion.

Kelvin De La Cruz picked up his 7th win in 10 decisions for the Captains, while Lincoln dropped to 4-5 on the season.
