Charleston starter Joey Maher and two relievers combined for 16 strikeouts and a five-hit shutout, and the RiverDogs hit three home runs on their way to a 9-0 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night in Charleston, South Carolina.
Vicente Conde led off the bottom of the second inning with his third home run of the season, and the RiverDogs added four runs in the third. Bo Thompson led off with a homer. Isaias Tejeda singled and moved to third base on a double by Austin Aune. Conde's sacrifice fly scored Tejeda as Aune moved to third. A single by Angel Aguilar scored Aune to give Charleston a 4-0 lead. Aguilar stole second, moved to third on a ground out by Collin Slaybaugh and scored on a single by Alexander Palma.
Tejeda hit a two-run homer in the fourth to make the score 7-0. The RiverDogs added two in the sixth, one on a bases-loaded walk to Conde, and the other on a run-scoring single by Aguilar.
Maher (4-4) worked the first six innings, struck out 11 batters and walked none. He allowed four hits.
Philip Walby pitched a scoreless seventh, and Conner Kendrick finished the game, striking out four, walking two and allowing one hit in two innings.
Legends starter Scott Blewett (2-5) was the losing pitcher.
Game two of the three-game series will be played Wednesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
