Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - Tuesday night was the annual Green Day celebration at Fluor Field, but the Asheville Tourists made the Greenville Drive wave the white flag in the series opener, routing the home team 9-2 in front of 5,448 fans.
A four-run third inning for the Tourists (26-17, 58-55) was all the offense necessary. Ryan Stephens began the frame with a solo homer to right off Drive (21-23, 59-55) starter Dedgar Jimenez (6-8). Max White added an RBI groundout, and an RBI single by Dom Nunez followed by an RBI groundout from Yonathan Daza capped the big inning.
The Tourists added single runs in the fourth and fifth against Jimenez on an RBI single by Luis Jean and an RBI single by Daza.
Ryan Castellani (1-7) notched the win for Asheville after working six innings and striking out six while giving up four hits, two runs and one walk. Yoely Bello and James Lomangino kept the Drive off the board for the final three innings to finish off the game.
The Drive plated their first run of the night in the third when J.T. Watkins singled and later came in to score on an RBI groundout by Michael Chavis.
In the fourth, Javier Guerra smacked a Castellani pitch over the right field wall for his 15th homer of the season.
Asheville scored three more times in the ninth to put the game further out of reach.
Chavis and Guerra collected two hits apiece for Greenville. Asheville was led by three-hit nights from Nunez and Josh Fuentes, while Daza and Jean picked up two hits each.
Game two of the three-game series begins at 7:05 on Wednesday night at Fluor Field. LH Jalen Beeks (9-4, 3.98) starts for the Drive, and the Tourists will send RH Carlos Polanco (8-9, 4.38) to the mound.
