Augusta GreenJackets News Release
AUGUSTA, GA: On Tuesday, August 11th the Augusta GreenJackets (57-56) shared the field with the visiting Hagerstown Suns (56-56) (Washington Nationals) for the first time in 2015. Patrick Young made his thirteenth start for the GreenJackets tonight going against Erick Fedde who had just been called up from the Auburn Double Days (Short Season A). It was Pat Young and the GreenJackets offense who ended up taking the night by strolling to an easy win of a score of nine to one.
The Suns were able to put an early run on the board in the top of the first inning when Jose Marmolejos hit into a double play to score lead off batter Andrew Stevenson who led off with a walk. Unfortunately for the Suns this was the only run they would score on the GreenJackets pitching staff Tuesday night.
On Tuesday night, Skyler Ewing proved to live up to his nickname "Tex". By playing just as big of a roll for the GreenJackets offense as the big of a state Texas is. He singled during his first at bat in the second inning. While on first base, Ewing took off for second and slid in safely for only his second stole base of 2015. Ewing then was then hit in along with teammate Chuckie Jones, on a double hit to the left field corner by cater Matt Winn. This was Winn's second double in just as many games, giving the GreenJackets the go ahead lead.
Patrick Young (8-2 ERA 3.62) once again put out a solid outing for the GreenJackets. After a rough go in his last start in Lexington, Young took firm control of tonight's game from the second inning on. Young punched in six innings, giving up six hits, and one earned run while striking out four in his GreenJackets leading eighth victory.
The GreenJackets opened the flood gates on the Suns in the fifth inning by putting up seven runs. A portion of the runs came off a bases clearing double by Will Callaway. A single by Dylan Davis scored Callaway from second base to up the lead one more run. Next batter, Jonah Areando singled as well to bring Skyler Ewing to the plate. Ewing crushed a stand up two RBI triple increase the GreenJackets lead. Ewing later scored on a wild pitch by Suns pitcher Drew Van Orden. At the end of just five innings of the play the GreenJackets owned a lead of nine to one over the Suns.
After Patrick Young left the game at the end of the sixth inning Connor Kaden stepped onto the mound for the GreenJackets final three innings of play. Kaden's three innings of work allowed him to pick up the save as the GreenJackets cruised to the victory. Tuesday night's final scoreboard line would read, one run, six hits, and one error for the Hagerstown Suns, and nine runs, eight hits, and one error for the Augusta GreenJackets. Patrick Young improves to eight and two, Connor Kaden picks up his save, and Erick Fedde receives his first lost during his first start with the Suns. Skyer Ewing (2-4) and Matt Winn (1-2) both knocked in two RBI while Will Callaway (2-4) collected three RBI for the GreenJackets.
Wednesday evening the GreenJackets and Suns will suit up again for another contest beginning at 7:05pm at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Chris Johnson (1-2 ERA 6.41) will face off against Luis Reyes (5-7 ERA 5.18) for the probable pitching match up.
Wednesdays at Lake Olmstead Stadium are Baseball Bingo nights presented by Georgia Natural Gas. Guests can play along with a Georgia Natural Gas bingo card in hopes of winning several prizes. One lucky fan will walk away with a cool $100 cash prize! Wednesday, the GreenJackets also host another Silver Jackets Club Game presented by AARP, Comfort Keepers, and JRS Medical.
