Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs, the fourth-year Class A affiliate of the New York Yankees, will host their 9th Annual "Kindness Beats Blindness RP Auction" at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
With all proceeds going to the Medical University of South Carolina's (MUSC) Storm Eye Institute and their on-going fight to prevent the loss of sight, the RiverDogs' silent and live auctions will be held Saturday, June 14, from 6 p.m. until the 6th inning of the regularly-scheduled Charleston-Savannah game that begins at 7:05 p.m.
There will be an abundance of gifts and services available including tickets to a New York Yankees game at Yankee Stadium - the final season of Yankee Stadium. There will also be the use of an Edisto Island beach house, Lasik eye surgery, golf with Bill Murray, Pit Passes for Lowes Motor Speedway and a behind-the-scenes tours of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY, to name a few.
There will also be various sports memorabilia, many of which are autographed, including a bat signed by the members of the Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2008, a pair of cleats signed by David Ortiz, a Jeff Francoeur signed Atlanta Braves jersey, a Field of Dreams Kevin Costner ball, John Smoltz and Goose Gossage signed baseballs, and many more items.
All fans that enter the ball park are eligible to bid on the various goods and services. More than $300,000 has been donated to the Storm Eye Institute from the past eight auctions to help fight retinitis pigmentosa, a disease that causes blindness and that has affected Rebecca Veeck, the daughter of RiverDogs president Mike Veeck.
"We put a lot of effort and emphasis into this annual auction because we firmly believe in the cause," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "Blindness hits us hard because of Rebecca, and we are trying to do our part to fight this disease that affects so many. Hopefully, raising needed funds for research will help prevent this terrible disease."
Additionally, the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday will receive a baseball bat courtesy of Pierce, Hearns, Sloan and McLeod.
For additional information about the Kindness Beats Blindness Auction or if you are interested in a donation, please call Melissa McCants at (843) 577-DOGS (3647) or visit www.riverdogs.com.
