Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Drew Naylor struck out a career high 13 hitters in a complete game effort, helping the BlueClaws to a 6-1 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds on Thursday night at FirstEnergy Park.

Naylor, who was named to the North Division All Star team earlier this week, showed why he is one of the best pitchers in the South Atlantic League. He cruised through nine innings for his second complete game of the season, allowing just five hits. He walked one Shorebird hitter, while striking out a career-best 13.

He now has 91 strikeouts, the most in the South Atlantic League and the second-most in all of Minor League Baseball.

The strikeouts were spread throughout the Delmarva lineup, as eight of the nine Shorebirds hitters struck out at least once. Naylor (5-2) struck out the first four hitters he faced and five of the first six.

The BlueClaws right-hander had the support of some early offense against a sloppy Delmarva squad. Lakewood got three runs in the first inning against Shorebirds starter Cole McCurry. Matt Rizzotti picked up a clutch two-out, two-RBI double to put the 'Claws on the board.

Naylor also became the first pitcher in the South Atlantic League to throw two complete games this season.

Lakewood scored in each of the first four innings, chasing McCurry (2-5) after just three. The Shorebirds starter gave up five runs, four earned, in his three innings, while walking two. He also had to deal with three errors by his defense.

The 'Claws added single runs in the second, third and fourth, although Joel Naughton was the only player to pick up an RBI in that stretch.

The Shorebirds finally got to Naylor in the ninth inning, picking up a pair of hits, including a double off the bat of Joe Nowicki. Joe Mahoney followed up with an RBI groundout that scored Ryan Adams from third. Naylor walked Tyler Henson before getting Walley Crancer to ground out to end the ballgame.

The victory was the fourth in the last five games for the BlueClaws (33-26) and their 12th in the last 14. They moved to within one half game of Delmarva (33-25) for second place in the North Division with 11 games remaining in the first half.

The BlueClaws still have seven games remaining with the Shorebirds in the final week and a half of the first half, including a game tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. at FirstEnergy Park. Julian Sampson (2-1) will make his first start since going to the disabled list May 22 after being hit with a line drive in the side. Left-hander Tony Butler (2-2) will start for the Shorebirds.

As like each Friday night at FirstEnergy Park, post- game fireworks will follow the game, presented by Toyota and Scion World of Lakewood.
