Strong pitching propels Shorebirds

June 5, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

Lakewood, NJ- BlueClaw starting pitcher Drew Naylor brought his A game, striking out 13 Shorebirds while simultaneously bringing down Delmarva's offense and, consequently, their winning streak. The Shorebirds lost for the first time in nine days, falling 6-1 to begin the road trip in Lakewood.

Naylor set the tone early by striking out the side in the top of the first inning and striking out five of the first six batters he faced. Returning to the mound to start the ninth seeking a shutout, Naylor allowed one run in the ninth. The lone Shorebird tally did not diminish the pitching effort, though, as the young Australian right-hander dominated Delmarva on the evening.

Lakewood scored three times in the first off Shorebird starter Cole McCurry, all of which came with two outs. Matt Rizotti's two-out double brought in two runs, and Dennis Winn's single scored Rizotti to spot the BlueClaws an early edge. Lakewood proceeded to add a single run in each of the next three innings, handing Naylor plenty of cushion that he would not even need.

In relief, Shorebirds right-hander Aubrey Miller was very solid, allowing just one run in his five innings on the mound. But Delmarva's offense was never able to find a rhythm against Naylor.

Joe Nowicki recorded the only two extra base hits and was the only Shorebird with multiple hits. Nowicki's two-doubles gave him a decent offensive evening, but there was very little to be had against Naylor.
