Drive Rally to Complete Sweep of GreenJackets, 6-4

June 5, 2008 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Greenville Drive News Release

Greenville, SC - Newcomer Jose Capellan pitched five scoreless innings, only to see a win in his 2008 debut disappear as the Augusta GreenJackets scored four runs in the top of the seventh.

However, the Drive (34-27) were able to pick themselves up and plate four of their own in the bottom of the eighth and pull out a 6-4 win, completing the two-game sweep of the GreenJackets (34-26) in front of 5,927 fans at Fluor Field.

Jered Stanley, who was one of four Drive batters to record a multi-hit game, put Greenville in front in the bottom of the second with a solo homer. Two innings later Luis Exposito gave the Drive a two-run lead with a solo shot of his own.

Retiring the first six batters he faced, including striking out the side in the top of the second, Capellan looked like a pitcher who was making his 10th start of the season, not his first. The southpaw scattered four hits and a walk, working out of a jam in the third in which the GreenJackets had a pair of runners in scoring position and only one out.

After sitting Augusta down in order in his first inning of relief, Ryne Lawson ran into trouble in the seventh. The GreenJackets scored four runs, only one of which was earned, capped by a three-run double off the bat of Nick Noonan.

Just when it looked like the Drive were dead in the water, they rallied with four runs in the bottom of the eighth. A single by Stanley scored Ryan Kalish, who finished 3-for-4, and Exposito added an RBI-single to tie the game. After a Daniel Turpen (3-3) wild pitch allowed Exposito and Stanley to move up to second and third, respectively, Ty Weeden delivered the eventual game-winner with a two-out, two-run single.

Although Capellan did not earn the win, another newcomer - Javier Garcia (1-0) - picked up the win in his first appearance with the Drive. The right-hander tossed 1.1 scoreless innings before giving way to Felix Ventura, who tossed a perfect ninth to record his seventh save of the season.

The Drive now head out on the road for a six-game road trip where they will look to improve on their South Atlantic League-best 22-7 road record. They begin a three-game series versus the Ashville Tourists tomorrow night with first pitch set for 7:05 PM. Left-hander Jose Alvarez will toe the rubber for Greenville as Asheville counters with right-hander Jhoulys Chacin.

The Drive return home to Fluor Field on Friday, June 13th with a three-game series versus these same Augusta GreenJackets. Single-game tickets, luxury accommodations, and group outings can be purchased by logging onto www.GreenvilleDrive.com or by calling (864) 240-4500.
