Charleston RiverDogs News Release

Charleston took advantage of 15 bases on balls and six Rome errors as the RiverDogs walked over the Braves, 12-2, in South Atlantic League action Thursday night in front of 6,532 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston takes three of four games from the Braves and seven of eight in the homestand. The RiverDogs improve to 40-20 on the season, including 10-2 against the Braves. Rome falls to 19-40.

Asheville won for the 11th time in its last 12 games, a 5-4 victory over Hickory, and so the Tourists remain 2 ½ games ahead of Charleston in the Southern Division standings with 10 games remaining in the first half.

One night after spotting Rome with four runs in the first inning, Charleston retaliated with eight runs in the first three frames - seven against the ineffective Braves starter Eric Barrett (1-6).

In the first, the RiverDogs scored twice against Barrett with Jesus Montero driving in the first tally on an RBI on a ground out. Then with two away and a runner on third base, Austin Romine reached on the first of Rome third baseman Jon Gilmore's three fielding errors, also plating a run and giving the hosts a quick 2-0 lead.

Charleston then put a five-spot on the board in the second frame, highlighted by an RBI double by Justin Snyder, RBI singles by Bradley Suttle and Romine, and a two-run single by Carmen Angelini. The RiverDogs chased Barrett after only 1.1 innings pitched and led the game 7-0 after two.

Rome got on the scoreboard twice in the third against Charleston starter Adam Olbrychowski. Javier Dominguez doubled with one out and scored on a Snyder throwing error from second base. Cole Miles then doubled to drive home the second and final Braves run of the night.

Up 7-2 in the third, the RiverDogs scored a run when Jaye Chapman walked the bases loaded and Suttle drew another base on balls to mark the eighth run.

The RiverDogs erupted for four more runs in the seventh inning on two hits and three errors. Two runs scored on one play, a double error on Gilmore on an Angelini grounder to third base. Austin Krum later collected an RBI single and Snyder drove home the 12th tally when he lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

Rome got two hits in the top of the ninth inning against reliever Gabe Medina, which finally gave them more hits than errors for the contest.

For the game, Charleston had 13 plate appearances with the bases loaded. The RiverDogs loaded the bases in six of the eight inning in which they batted, and even with the 13 runs scored still left 18 on base.

Krum paced Charleston's 12-hit attack with three, while Snyder and Romine each had two knocks. Angelini led the hosts with three runs batted in while Snyder, Suttle and Krum had two apiece.

Rome collected seven hits with Lee leading the pack with two.

Olbrychowski lasted only three innings and surrendered two runs on four hits while walking one and fanning three. Wilkins de la Rosa (3-1), who threw four complete innings, earned the victory as he recorded five punchouts while surrendering only one hit. Medina pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits.

Barrett lasted only 1.1 innings and allowed seven runs on five hits while walking five. Chapman also struggled on the hill as he pitched 2.2 innings and walked six.

To make matters worse, Rome pitchers also had two wild pitches and hit one RiverDog. Charleston begins a seven-game road trip to Georgia with a three-game set at Savannah Friday through Sunday. RiverDogs manager Torre Tyson has announced that righty Lance Pendleton (4-2, 2.37 ERA) will toe the slab for the RiverDogs in game one Friday night, while Savannah is expected to counter with southpaw Michael Antonini (4-3, 2.94 ERA).
