Lake County Captains News Release
(Hagerstown, MD) - Every batter in the Lake County Captains line up scored at least one run and the Captains overcame a 5-2 deficit on their way to a 10-6 victory over the Hagerstown Suns on Thursday. Roman Peña and Doug Pickens each had three hits and Dustin Realini reached base in all five of his at-bats to lead the Captains offense. The Captains bullpen pitched 6.2 innings of relief and allowed only one run. The Captains lead in the Northern Division is back up to 1.5 games over Delmarva as they lost their game to Lakewood.
The Captains jumped on Suns starter Justin Jones in the first inning. Adam White led off the game with a double and went to third on a single by Lucas Montero. Montero stole second to put runners at second and third. White was thrown out at home plate on a ground ball by Roman Peña. Dustin Realini then singled off the shortstop Dan Lyons' glove to score Montero from second. Lyons tried to throw out Montero at home but the ball was overthrown allowing Peña to get to third base. The overthrown ball was retrieved by Jones who tried to throw out Peña at third and his throw sailed past the third baseman which allowed Peña to score to make it 2-0. The Suns got a run back in the bottom of the first off of Captains starter Joey Mahalic who walked Dan Lyons. Lyons went to second on a ground out and scored on a single by Stephen King to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Suns tied it in the second inning on a solo home run by Tim Pahuta and went ahead 3-2 in the same frame when Mark Gildea scored on an error by shortstop Ron Rivas. The Suns extended their lead in the third inning on a solo homer by Stephen King and added a second run on an RBI double by Pahuta and they led 5-2.
The Captains tied it at 5-5 in the fourth inning getting an RBI from Ron Rivas that scored Jeff Hehr and then the tying runs scored on an error by Suns first baseman Bill Rhinehart that allowed Rivas and Adam White to score. The Captains took the lead in the fifth inning off of reliever Terrance Engles when they scored three runs on RBI's by Hehr and White and another run scored on another error by Rhinehart to give the Captains an 8-5 lead. The Captains tacked on two more in the sixth inning on RBI's by Matt Brown and Karexon Sanchez to up the lead to 10-5.
Mahalic went 2.1 innings giving up five runs, four earned on five hits, walking three and striking out two but did not factor in the decision. Jonathan Holt relieved Mahalic in the third and pitched 2.2 scoreless innings and picked up his second win of the year to up his mark to 2-4. John Gaub came on in the sixth inning and pitched two scoreless innings striking out four. Gary Campfield followed Gaub in the eighth inning allowing one run and Vinnie Pestano pitched a scoreless ninth inning. Engles suffered his first loss of the year to drop his record 3-1.
The Captains and Suns play game two of the series on Friday at 6:35 PM with the Captains sending LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (4-2, 1.40) to the mound against the Shorebirds LHP Colten Willems (4-4, 4.36). The game can be heard on AM 1330 WELW, WELW.COM or CAPTAINSBASEBALL.COM.
The Captains return home on Monday, June 9th for an eight-game homestand against Delmarva and Hagerstown to conclude the first half. Monday's game will feature Buck Night at Classic Park with $1 hot dogs, beer, and soda.
The Captains rained out game in Delmarva on Wednesday, June 4th will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Classic Park on Tuesday, June 10th with game one beginning at 5:05 PM.
