Bandits On The Field
Bandits pitcher Enoli Paredes picked up his second win of the season on Friday night, firing 5.2 scoreless innings. The right-hander has not been scored upon in his last four appearances, a stretch extending 16.1 innings. That consecutive scoreless innings streak has him 1.2 innings short of Patrick Sandoval's team-best 18.0 straight scoreless innings in early May.
Astros 2018 first round pick Seth Beer made an immediate impact on the River Bandits lineup in his first four games with the team. He was 7-17 at the plate with a double, five runs batted in, and a run scored. In addition, he was robbed of extra-bases on two fantastic plays from Kane County outfielders. Beer was promoted to the Quad Cities after a brief 11-game stint in Tri-City, during which he belted four home runs.
The River Bandits pitching staff has blown away the competition when it comes to striking out opposing hitters. As of Monday, the River Bandits had recorded 859 strikeouts in 81 games, the highest total in the Midwest League. The next closest team, Clinton, had 108 fewer strikeouts. The team was on pace for 1,485 strikeouts this season which would blow away the Midwest League record of 1,307 set by Fort Wayne last year.
The River Bandits secured a playoff berth by winning the first half title in the Western Division. Their 2-1 win over Burlington on June 16 guaranteed them the opportunity to defend their 2017 title when the calendar turns to September. The playoff berth is the sixth in the last nine years for the organization. Since becoming an affiliate of the Astros in 2013, the team has made it into the postseason following four of the six seasons.
