Lugnuts Lull 'Caps Bats
July 3, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - West Michigan Whitecaps newcomer Kody Clemens excelled defensively, but the bats struggled as the Lansing Lugnuts won 4-0 Monday night in front of a hearty crowd of 6,857 at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Clemens, who joined the 'Caps over the past weekend, participated in two outstanding diving plays which resulted in outs, and recorded his first professional hit - one of only four on the night for West Michigan. Lansing's Samad Taylor opened the scoring by greeting "Caps starter Wilkel Hernandez with a second inning two-run single and a 2-0 margin. Hernandez was making his Midwest League debut.
Meanwhile, Lugnuts starter Donne Sellers stifled the Whitecaps all night long with five innings of three-hit baseball. Lansing tacked on solo runs in the sixth and ninth innings and put the finishing touches on a shutout that represented the sixth of 2018 for the Whitecaps. West Michigan managed only two base runners in any inning in the 4-0 defeat.
Hernandez (0-1) struggled with base runners in every one of his 3.2 innings, surrendering five hits and five walks in taking the loss. Sellers (6-1) earned the victory, and reliever Kyle Weatherly picked up save number three on the 2018 campaign. With the defeat, the Whitecaps fall to 41-41 on the year and have lost seven of their last ten contests, while the Lugnuts advance to 53-29 overall and remain in first place in the Eastern Division second-half standings. The Whitecaps are 5-7 overall in the second half. The loss also represents the longest losing streak of the season for the "Caps at five games.
