July 3, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - It was a hot and humid day to start off the Burlington Bees (31-46) double header against the Cedar Rapids Kernels (39-38), but Burlington fell in game one losing 7-4. Bailey Ober (4-1) had a rough start, but still picked up his fourth victory of the season thanks to a good day at the plate from the Kernels. Ober went five innings, allowed four runs on six hits, walked one, and struck out five. Isaac Mattson (5-3) made his first start since June 1st but had a day to forget on the mound. Mattson went just two innings, allowed five runs on nine hits, walked one, and struck out three.

Kernels go up big early on

Burlington found themselves in a big hole early after Cedar Rapids put up five runs in the first two innings. Akil Baddoo led the game off with his tenth double of the season and was soon brought in by Jacob Pearson on a single to left to give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead. Pearson would advance to third on his single, because of an error by Jimmy Barnes. Royce Lewis then brought in Pearson on a sacrifice fly to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead. After back to back singles from Jose Miranda and Robby Rinn, Jean Carlos Arias singled to center to bring in Miranda and make it 3-0 Kernels.

Cedar Rapids led the second inning off with a double as well, this one coming from David Banuelos and advanced to third on a single from Jordan Gore. Baddoo then got his second hit of the game on a single to right and also drove in a run to make the score 4-0. After Pearson stuck out, Lewis drove in his second run of the game, this time on a single to right to give Cedar Rapids a 5-0 lead in the second.

Connor Fitzsimons did give the Bees one run in the second on a ground out after Spencer Griffin led the inning off with a triple to make it 5-1.

Bees cash in with big fourth inning

Cedar Rapids took a 6-1 lead in the top half of the fourth on a double from Rinn, but the Bees would soon be back in the game. Griffin drew a one out walk and advanced to second on a fly out from Julio Garcia. Fitzsimons then got his second RBI of the game on a single to left to make the score 6-2. After a mound visit by the Kernels, Harrison Wenson hit a two run homerun for his fourth of the season, to cut the Kernels lead to 6-4.

Bees late mistakes cost them

Burlington had a big scoring opportunity in the fifth, after Leonardo Rivas led the inning off with a double, but Burlington's top of the lineup failed to bring him in.

Lewis got his second hit of the game in the sixth on a double to center. Miranda the hit a hard grounder near the middle of the infield and Garcia had a play on the grounder, but it took an odd hop and skipped off his glove for and error and give Cedar Rapids a 7-4 lead. Burlington failed to get a baserunner on in the final two innings and the Kernels took game one 7-4.

Kernels have a day on offense

Cedar Rapids got contribution as usual from the Twins first overall pick in last year's draft Royce Lewis. Lewis was 2-2 with two RBI's and a walk but wasn't the best hitter in the game. Akil Baddoo had himself a game at the leadoff spot, going 3-5 with an RBI and also crossed the plate once. Rinn also had a great day, going 2-2 with an RBI and two walks. The bottom hitters Banuelos and Gore also provided some hits, both going 2-4.
