Kernels Big Third Helps Them Take Game Two

July 3, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - The Burlington Bees (31-47) couldn't rally late in game two, as they fell to Cedar Rapids (40-38) 6-3. Jared Finkel (4-3) earned his fourth win out of the bullpen this season, going two and two thirds, allowing two runs on two hits, and striking out two. Luis Madero (2-6) didn't have his usual stuff tonight, as he suffered his sixth loss of the season. Madero went five innings, allowed four earned runs, five total on ten hits, and struck out five.

Both clubs put up runs in the first

Akil Baddoo continued where he left off from game one, sending the first pitch of the ball game over the wall in center to give Cedar Rapids an early 1-0 lead. Robby Rinn hit a two out double and scored after Jared Akins hit a groundball between Connor Fitzsimons' legs at first to give the Kernels a 2-0 lead.

However, Burlington didn't wait around very long to get runs on their side of the score board either. Leonardo Rivas led the offense off with his 11th double of the season, and Keinner Pina brought him in on a double down the right field line to cut the Kernels lead to 2-1. Burlington did have runners on second and third after the Pina double, but Spencer Griffin and Julio Garcia couldn't find a way to drive in anymore runs in the first.

Kernels cash in with big third inning

Since baseball fans love seeing homeruns, Jean Carlos Arias decided to send a no doughter over the right field wall for a solo shot to give Cedar Rapids a 3-1 lead. Arias hit it so far, Kevin Williams Jr just looked up at it and didn't' even bother moving. Royce Lewis then gave them a runner in scoring position on a double to right. Later on, with two outs, Andrew Bechtold sent another double to right, making the score 4-1. The damage wasn't done yet, as Trey Cabbage barely got a ball over the head of a diving Torii Hunter in center for an RBI triple to give Cedar Rapids a 5-1 lead.

Williams tacks on a pair late, but it's not enough

Jeyson Sanchez started off the fifth inning by getting hit in the arm by a pitch and got over to second base on a groundout from Hunter. Kevin Williams Jr rewarded Hunter for moving the runner over on an RBI single to center to cut the Kernels lead to 5-2.

Cedar Rapids quickly took the run back on a solo homerun from Ben Rodriguez that barely snuck over the wall in left.

In the seventh, Sanchez got hit by a pitch again, this time in the back and once again advanced to second on a groundout from Hunter. Williams sent his third hit of the game off the wall in center to drive in a run and make the score 6-3. Cedar Rapids would then brought in Jose Martinez and he got Keinner Pina to groundout to short ending the game and giving Cedar Rapids a 6-3 victory.

Top of the lineup delivers in game two

Once again, the Kernels got big production from the top part of their lineup in game two. Baddoo was 2-4 with a homerun, Arias was 2-4 with a homerun, and Royce Lewis was 3-4 with three doubles and a run scored. Lewis and Baddoo both looked extremely impressive in both games at the plate tonight. Baddoo ended up going 5-9 with two RBI's and Lewis finished 5-6, four of his hits being doubles, drove in two runs in game one, and drew a walk. The Cedar Rapids offense overall looked impressive in both games, combining to score 13 runs on 27 hits. Jared Akins was actually the only player who had an at bat for the Kernels tonight to not get a hit.

Rough night for the pitching staff

The Bees pitching just got completely overwhelmed by some amazing hitting from Cedar Rapids. Starters Isaac Mattson and Luis Madero got hit the worst in the double header. The two combined to allow ten runs on 19 hits but did only allow one walk. The Bees pitching only threw three walks in game one, and only one in game two. Cedar Rapids just had one of those nights where everyone was clicking on offense and they made the Bees pay. All Burlington can do is tip their hats to the Kernels for a great night on offense and get ready for tomorrow's game.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to get a win in the series, as game three is set to begin at 6:30 pm. Burlington is expected to start Denny Brady, who is 0-1 with a 1.13 ERA in three starts for the Bees. Cedar Rapids is expected to start Jordan Balazovic, who is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in three starts and four games this season. Tomorrow is also fireworks night at Community Field. The Bees will be putting on a fireworks show about 15 minutes after the game ends.
