South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: Bowling Green Hot Rods starter Austin Franklin was rocking and rolling into the bottom of the 7th inning at Four Winds Field Tuesday night. That was until Michael Cruz started a rally with a single.

With two men on in the 7th, Christian Donahue plated the first run of the inning on a line drive down the right field line that was just short of a home run. Cruz trotted home to bring South Bend within a run. On a subsequent ground ball, Chris Singleton chopped a grounder to third base. Zach Rutherford threw home to try and beat the sliding runner Brandon Hughes. The Cubs right fielder was ruled safe and the game was tied at 3-3.

That knocked Franklin out of the game. He went from being in line for the win to being on the hook for the loss in a matter of five hitters. The inning continued as right hander Tyler Zombro was summoned out of the bullpen. Zach Davis continued the rally by bringing in Donahue.

Finally, for the fourth run of the inning, Jared Young ripped a ball into center field for a base hit. The base knock scored Davis to complete the four run rally. Young finished with two RBI in the game to bring his total on the season to 51 on the season.

At one point, Franklin sent 12 straight Cubs down in order. He was dominant in the middle frames. Cubs starter Ricky Tyler Thomas was on the hook for a few innings after he gave up just two runs and struck out eight batters. The two runs both came on a Carl Chester home run in the 2nd. Thomas took a no-decision.

South Bend added a run in the bottom of the 8th for insurance purposes. They took the three run lead into the 9th.

On for the final three outs was lefty Yapson Gomez. The southpaw had thrown two scoreless innings prior to the 9th. There was a moment of worry when Devin Davis reached on a fielding error to start the 9th inning. Gomez dropped a ball at first base on a routine flip to the pitcher.

Gomez stuck with it and got the ground ball he needed with one out. On a 6-4-3 double play, the Cubs finished off the Hot Rods. Gomez earned the win, while Franklin took the loss despite being dominant for the majority of the ballgame.

The Hot Rods and Cubs have now split the first two games of a four game overall set. The final two contests will take place down at Bowling Green tomorrow night. First pitch in Fourth of July action in Kentucky is set for 7:35 p.m. ET.
