July 3, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA. - It was another blowout loss for the Burlington Bees (1-10,31-49), as they were shutout for the ninth time this season, in their 8-0 loss to the Cedar Rapids Kernels (10-1,42-38). Bryan Sammons (5-4) pitched his second straight scoreless start, going six innings, allowed six hits and struck out six to bring his ERA down to 2.47. Oliver Ortega (3-4) looked good in the first two innings but ran into problems in the third. Ortega went just three innings, allowed five runs, four earned on four hits, walked three, and struck out five.

Kernels jump on Ortega in the third

Ortega was looking good early on after getting out of two walks in the first and getting the Kernels to go three up, three down in the second. However, that all went away when Ben Rodriguez sent his sixth homerun of the season to lead off the third and give Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead. After a single from Akil Baddoo and a walk drawn by Jacob Pearson, Royce Lewis drove in his 49th run of the season on a single to right center, to make it 2-0.

Later in the inning, Jean Carlos Arias hit a ground ball past Connor Fitzsimons at first and it ended up rolling all the way to the wall, which allowed Arias to get a triple out of it and drive in two more runs to make it 4-0. Andrew Bechtold drove in the final run of the inning when he sent a playable fly ball to center, but Spencer Griffin failed to make the catch, resulting in an error and another run for the Kernels to make it 5-0.

Miranda ends all hopes with three run blast

Baddoo led the seventh inning off with his twelfth double of the season and Pearson drew his second walk of the afternoon to put runners on first and second. Then Jose Miranda hit his eighth homerun to right to put the game on ice and give Cedar Rapids a commanding 8-0 lead. Miranda's homerun was a little cheap, since it bounced off the top of the right field wall and ended up bouncing over, rather than staying in play.

Sammons and cast star in shut out performance

Sammons continued to dominate opposing lineups and has now pitched 15 straight scoreless innings. Cedar Rapids recorded their ninth shutout win of the season and currently lead all teams in the Midwest League in that category. However, the Kernels couldn't have gotten the shut out without three big innings from their bullpen. Jose Martinez went two innings, allowed three hits and struck out three in his 21st appearance of the year and Calvin Faucher took care of the ninth with just allowing a hit. Faucher has now appeared in 25 games for Cedar Rapids and has an ERA of only 1.16.

Cedar Rapids continues to dominate the second half of the season with their tenth win overall and their fourth in a row now. Cedar Rapids currently has the best overall second half record at 10-1 and they have a two and a half lead over Clinton and Peoria for the division.

Fans see two players make debut for Burlington

With Kida De La Cruz and Jorge Tavarez recently getting called up, Burlington got to welcome in new comer Andrew Wantz. Wantz is a 22 year old righty who was drafted in the seventh round by the Angles in the 2018 MLB draft. Wantz appeared in the sixth and after giving up a leadoff walk, got into a grove and struck out the next two hitters. However, Wantz did run into troubles in the seventh with the three run homerun by Miranda. Wantz finished the day with two innings pitched, allowing three runs on two hits, walking three, and striking out four.

Burlington also welcomed a new outfielder Orlando Martinez. Martinez is a 20 year old undrafted free agent from Havana Cuba got called up after an impressive twelve games with the Orem Owls, hitting .365, hitting two homeruns, and finishing with ten RBI's. Martinez finished his debut 1-4 and made a few nice plays out in left field.

Looking Ahead

The Bees will look to end their six game losing streak, as they will host the Peoria Chiefs tomorrow night at 6:30. Burlington is expected to start Jose Soriano, who is 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA. Soriano will look to bounce back after his rough start against Clinton, where he allowed three runs in just one third of an inning of work. Peoria is expected to start Franyel Casadilla, who is 1-1 with a 10.80 ERA in three starts for Peoria. Casadilla will also look to bounce back after a rough start, after he gave up six runs and twelve hits in five innings against Kane County. Tomorrow night is also dollar Monday at Community Field. Hotdogs, soda, popcorn, and kid's tickets will cost you just one dollar. Adult general admission will only cost two dollars.
