Hillman Leads Captains to Victory

Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - Another day, another stellar performance by a Captains starter. Juan Hillman shut out the Dayton Dragons (6-7, 37-44) over five innings and led the Lake County Captains (5-8) to a 3-2 victory on Tuesday night at Classic Park.
Hillman weathered early control issues to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard. The southpaw walked two of the first three batters he faced in the first, but turned around and retired the next seven men in a row. In the third, Dayton broke the string with a two-out single by Andy Sugilio. Hillman then hit Jeter Downs, but the Captains' starter escaped again with a ground out to shortstop to end the inning.
Dayton threatened in the fourth when Malik Collymore led off with a swinging bunt down to the third base side of the mound and Hillman fired a throw wild toward first, moving Collymore to second. After Hillman struck out Alejo Lopez, he walked J.D. Williams. Hillman responded by fanning Mark Kolozsvary and striking out Mitch Piatnik looking to end the inning. The fifth was smooth sailing for Hillman. After a leadoff bunt by Jose Garcia, the southpaw retired the next three men to end his outing.
Lake County gave Hillman all the run support he needed in the second. Oscar Gonzalez led off with a single against starter Tyler Mondile and then stole second. Two batters later, Jose Vicente grounded a single into center and Gonzalez raced home with the game's first run. Jose Medina came up next and pulled a two-run homer over the right field wall to give the Captains a 3-0 lead.
After Hillman's night was done, Nick Sandlin pitched a one-two-three sixth with a pair of strikeouts and a lineout. In the seventh, however, the Dragons broke through against Jonathan Teaney. Kolozsvary worked a leadoff walk and Piatnik lined a single into left. Medina ranged toward the line to field Piatnik's knock, but bobbled the ball, allowing Kolozsvary to reach third and Piatnik to advance to second. Garcia followed with an RBI ground out to shortstop that plated Kolozsvary and pushed Piatnik to third. Sugilio then hit a dribbler back to the mound, but Piatnik got a quick jump toward home and Teaney's only play was to first. Piatnik scored to cut the Captains' lead to 3-2.
Kyle Nelson escaped trouble in the eighth inning and slammed the door shut in the ninth. In the eighth, Collymore reached on an infield single with one out. After Nelson got Lopez to pop out in foul ground at first, Williams singled and stole second, putting runners on second and third with two outs. Nelson then struck out Kolozsvary swinging to end the inning. The lefty set the side down in order in the ninth to seal the win and pick up his fifth save.
Hillman (2-8) earned the win with five shutout innings on the mound. He allowed just three hits, all of which were singles and two of which were infield hits. Hillman struck out six, walked three and hit one batter.
Mondile (2-7) took the loss. The Dayton right-hander surrendered three runs on seven hits over five innings of work. He struck out five and did not issue a walk.
The Captains and Dragons split the first two games of this home-and-home series. The series shifts to Dayton for two more games on Wednesday and Thursday. Wednesday's Independence Day ballgame is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Fifth Third Field.
