Riley Armstrong Named Worcester Sharks' AHL Man Of The Year

WORCESTER - Worcester Sharks President and CEO Michael T. Lehr announced that Riley Armstrong has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Worcester community during the 2007-08 season. It is the second straight season that he has won the award.

Armstrong, a 23-year-old native of Saskatoon, SK is playing in his second season with the Worcester Sharks and has made the greatest commitment to the community and charitable organizations over the course of the season. Riley has quickly become one of the most popular players in the franchise's history, known for his friendliness towards fans and willingness to go the extra mile.

Over the past season with the Sharks, Armstrong has participated in many community service projects; including Reading is Cool, hospital visits, Rink Buddies, celebrity bartending, Junior Sharks Hockey Clinics, fan-related events, and much more.

Armstrong is currently growing out his hair for the Locks of Love program in support of cancer awareness. After the Sharks game on April 6th, Riley will shave his head on the DCU Center ice and donate his hair to the Locks of Love program.

As one of the Sharks team leaders, Armstrong has been instrumental in helping the organization complete another successful season in the community relations department, with over 300 appearances throughout the central Massachusetts region.

In recognition of his efforts, Armstrong will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming Sharks home game.

Armstrong is now one of 29 finalists for the AHL's 2007-08 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award is named after the former Hershey Bears forward and AHL All-Star who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia. The winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award will be announced by the AHL in the coming weeks.

The Sharks begin a three-in-three road weekend on Friday with a trip to Hartford, followed by contests in Lowell on Saturday night and Providence on Sunday afternoon. Worcester also plays in Springfield the following Wednesday before returning to the DCU Center on Friday, April 4 for a 7:05 p.m. affair with the Portland Pirates.
