RHP Jhonny Nunez acquired by Yankees and assigned to Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Jhonny Nunez has been acquired from the New York Yankees from Washington, and assigned to Trenton. LHP Phil Coke has been promoted from Trenton to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A).

Nunez was acquired by the Yankees from Washington on 7/31. He has split the season between Potomac (High-A) and Harrisburg (Double-A). Nunez was 2-8 with a 5.22 ERA in 21 G/17 GS for Potomac. He struck out 82 and walked only 21 in 81 IP. Nunez was 0-0 with a 1.13 ERA in 5 games for the Senators. He entered the season as the 25th rated prospect in the Washington Organization according to Baseball America. Nunez was 4-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 23 G (22 starts) for Hagerstown (Low-A) during 2007. He was acquired by Washington from Los Angeles in 2006. He was originally signed as a non-drafted FA by Los Angeles 12/9/03.

Coke was 9-4 with a 2.51 ERA for Trenton this season in 23 G (20 starts). He is second in the Eastern League in lowest ERA, and third in strikeouts (115). He was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week, in the week ending 7/20. He was 3-1 with a 0.87 ERA in July (31 IP). Coke has made one start this season for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He took the loss against Norfolk on 6/3. He gave up eight hits and three earned runs in three innings. Last season, Coke was 7-3 with a 3.09 ERA in 17 G (16 starts) for Tampa. He was originally a 26th round pick in the 2002 draft by the Yankees.

Trenton starts a six-day seven-game road trip on Friday night against the Portland Sea Dogs, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, from Hadlock Field in Portland, ME. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. RHP Jason Jones (10-5, 3.03) will start for Trenton against Portland LHP Kris Johnson (7-5, 3.60).
