
Thunder pull out pitcher's duel

Trenton Thunder News Release
(Trenton, NJ)- Trenton Starting pitcher Jason Jones tossed six plus innings, and the Thunder held off Portland 3-2 on Friday night at Hadlock Field. The Thunder have now won three in a row, six in a row over the Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field. Trenton also clinched the season-series over the Sea Dogs. Trenton's Northern Division lead is now seven games over Portland.
The Thunder scored two runs in the fourth inning off of Portland Starting pitcher Kris Johnson (7-6) to take a 2-0 lead. Trenton Left fielder Colin Curtis led off the frame with a double. Third baseman Kevin Russo then reached on an error by Portland Second baseman Ryan Khoury to advance Curtis to third base. Right fielder Edwar Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to give Trenton a 1-0 lead. Later in the frame, Designated hitter James Cooper connected on an RBI single to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead. Trenton (67-44) tacked on a run in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Center fielder Austin Jackson.
Portland (59-50) tallied two runs in the seventh inning to close the deficit to 3-2. The first five batters reached for the Sea Dogs off Jones. Designated hitter Lars Anderson had a two-run single for Portland to drive home the two runs. Trenton reliever Wilkins Arias came on with the bases loaded and nobody out, but proceeded to retire three in a row, to help Trenton maintain a 3-2 lead. Thunder reliever Kevin Whelan worked out of bases loaded trouble in the eighth inning, and went the final 1 1/3 innings to pick up his first save. Jones (11-5) earned the win as he went six plus innings and yielded only four hits and two runs. He retired the first 11 batters he faced, and only allowed one base runner in the first six innings. Johnson gave up only five hits and two runs (one earned) over six innings but took the loss. Jackson and Gonzalez had two hits in the win for Trenton.
Trenton and Portland will play a doubleheader at Hadlock Field on Saturday. The first game will start at 5:00 p.m. In the first game, RHP Michael Gardner (3-4, 3.12) will start for Trenton against Portland RHP Kyle Jackson (5-2, 5.93). Trenton's starting pitcher in the second game is TBA. LHP Daniel Haigwood (2-2, 3.46) will start for the Sea Dogs.
