Kratz, Smith smash HRs in 5-1 win over Connecticut

Manchester, NH- Erik Kratz belted a two-run home run to highlight a four-run fourth inning, and David Smith hit a towering homer off the roof of the Samuel Adams Bar & Grill an inning later to spearhead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' 5-1 victory over the Connecticut Defenders in front of a crowd of 5,285 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Friday night.

New Hampshire (47-66) erased a 1-0 lead against Connecticut (55-55) in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jacob Butler (2-for-4, R) led off with a single off Ben Snyder before Kratz (1-for-3, HR, BB, 2 RBI, R) ripped his fourth home run of the season off the patio in left-centerfield for a 2-1 lead. Ryan Patterson (1-for-4, BB, RBI) drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Andrew Pinckney (1-for-4, R), who singled, and Jonathan Diaz (1-for-2, 2 BB, R) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Travis Snider (0-for-3, SF, RBI) for a 4-1 lead.

Smith (1-for-4, HR, RBI, R) began the fifth inning with his eighth homer off Snyder, the bar roof shot that staked the Fisher Cats to a 5-1 lead.

Jean Machi (1-4), in his first start since April 24, worked five innings to notch his first victory since July 27, 2007. The right-hander allowed one run on four hits, walking three and notching five strikeouts.

Seth Overbey sparkled in relief, recording four strikeouts over three perfect innings. Daryl Harang closed it out with a scoreless ninth.

Snyder (1-3) suffered the loss by allowing five runs on eight hits in five innings. The left-hander fanned four and walked three.

The Defenders grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning against Machi on a two-out RBI single from Pablo Sandoval (1-for-4, RBI), scoring Kyle Haines (1-for-3, 2B, BB, R).

The Fisher Cats look to make it back-to-back wins over the Defenders on Saturday night at 7:05pm when New Hampshire left-hander Brad Mills (0-0, 0.00) pitches against Connecticut right-hander Joey Martinez (7-8, 2.84), the Bank of America Most Outstanding Pitcher at July 16th's Northeast Delta Dental Eastern League All-Star Game at Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
