Akron RubberDucks News Release
AKRON, OH - Akron's pitching staff was strong for nine innings, but the Aeros fell 3-1 in 10 frames to Harrisburg before 7,233 fans at Canal Park on Fireworks Friday Night. The Aeros fell to 67-46 overall and to 3-6 in extra-inning games, while the Senators improved to 62-50, moving to within 4.5 games of the first-place Aeros.
Both starting pitchers - Steven Wright for Akron and Adrian Alaniz for Harrisburg - cruised into the fifth inning with no score until Marvin Lowrance pounded a one-out solo home run off Wright to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.
That advantage held for Harrisburg until the eighth inning when, with two outs, Stephen Head pounded his 10th home run of the season into the last row of bleachers in right, tying the game at 1-1.
The game remained tied into the 10th inning, but Harrisburg rallied off relievers Chuck Lofgren and Randy Newsom. Former Aero Javi Herrera doubled with one out and the Aeros elected to intentionally walk pinch-hitter Edgardo Baez. Newsom then came on to face pinch-hitter Marcos Yepez, and he doubled into the gap in right-center on the first pitch he saw, scoring both runners and giving Harrisburg the 3-1 lead.
Adam Carr (2-1) picked up the win, allowing Akron's lone run in two innings of relief work. Steven Schmoll worked a perfect 10th inning, earning his sixth save. Lofgren (1-5) took the loss as he was responsible for both runners on base in the 10th. Lofgren had retired the first seven men he faced in his relief stint. Wright worked seven strong innings, retiring the first 11 men he faced. He allowed one run on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Alaniz worked five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits, but walked six. All told Harrisburg pitching issued nine free passes in the game, yet amazingly not a single walk came around to score as the Aeros left 10 runners on base.
The Aeros play game nine of this 10-game homestand Saturday at 7:05 p.m. against the Harrisburg. Left-hander Ryan Edell (5-6, 4.14 ERA) will take the hill for the Aeros against Harrisburg southpaw Justin Jones (2-2, 7.08 ERA). The first 1,000 fans at Canal Park will receive an Aeros T-Shirt, courtesy of First Merit Bank. The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
