Portland left the bases loaded in consecutive innings

(Portland, ME) - The Portland Sea Dogs (59-50) left the bases loaded twice during innings seven and eight, dropping the series opener to the Trenton Thunder (67-44), 3-2, Friday night at Hadlock Field in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368.

Jason Jones (11-5) beat the Sea Dogs for the third time this season, working 6+ innings on four hits and two runs. Jones retired the first 11 batters and 18 of 19 through six innings.

Kris Johnson (7-6) notched a quality start but took his first loss to Trenton in five starts. Johnson gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts.

Portland trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning but rallied for two runs. Jorge Jimenez led off the frame with a single and Portland loaded the bases on walks to Zach Daeges and Aaron Bates. Lars Anderson sent a 2-run single off the Maine Monster and Mark Wagner singled, knocking Jones out of the game. LHP Wilkins Arias retired the next three batters - Mickey Hall (strikeout), Ryan Khoury (popout) and Iggy Suarez (strikeout) to end the inning.

In the eighth inning, Bryan Pritz led off with a single but Arias retired the next two batters before leaving the game for Kevin Whelan. The righty walked Bates and Anderson but Wagner popped out to third base to end the threat. Whelan earned the save with a perfect ninth.

Trenton scored twice in the fourth inning off Johnson. Colin Curtis doubled and advanced to third base on a second baseman's error. Edwar Gonzalez roped an RBI single and James Cooper delivered a run-scoring single to center.

Richie Lentz surrendered a run-scoring single to Austin Jackson in the seventh inning. Lentz pitched two innings on three hits and one run. Carlos Vasquez pitched a perfect ninth.

On Saturday night Portland and Trenton will play a twinbill beginning at 5:00 PM.

Notes...Ryan Khoury was activated from the disabled list before the game and went 0-for-4...Portland's 7-9 hitters went 0-for-12.
