Ontario Reign News Release
ONTARIO, Calif. - The Ontario Reign (37-13-3-2), defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, rolled the Stockton Thunder (28-21-5-4) for the second game in row before 7,791 on Friday night.
At the halfway mark of the first period, Reign Captain Derek Couture gave his team a 1-0 lead while on the power play. C.J. Stretch won the draw and got the puck over to DaSilva who fired a shot on the net; his shot was rebounded for Couture to pick up and get past Olivier Roy.
In the final two minutes of the second period Stockton scored two quick goals to take the lead heading into the final frame.
Mike Little caught the puck just inside the hashes of the left faceoff circle and beat Sergey Kostenko's glove in his first Reign appearance. Matt Bergland and Matt Ambroz set up the play for Little.
Just 36 seconds later the Thunder struck again. This time Colten Hayes was the one to beat Kostenko. Shawn Weller and Brandon Davidson moved the action into the Reign zone. Weller played the puck behind the net and sent a quick pass to Hayes in the slot who snapped it in.
At 1:43 in the third stanza D.J. King scored his first Reign goal with help from C.J. Stretch. Stretch skated the puck end-to-end and sent a pass to King who charged the net and poked it past Roy for the equalizer.
Couture got on the board again in the third period to net the equalizer for the Reign at 16:08. He was in the perfect position in the slot to fire a laser past Roy. DaSilva set him up with a pass from deep inside the Thunder zone.
With just 15 seconds left in regulation, Stockton pulled their goalie opening to door for Brodie Sheahan to add to his goal totals for the season with an empty-netter he shot from his backhand at the blue line. Mario Lamoureux earned the lone assist.
Kostenko earned the win in his debut game stopping 19 of 21 shots; Roy took the loss with 26 saves on 29 shots faced.
Three Stars:
1. ONT - Derek Couture
2. ONT - C.J. Stretch
3. STK - Brandon Davidson
