Jackals Downed by the Wings Sellout Crowd of 3,810 Comes Out for Donate Life Night

Elmira Jackals News Release

ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals played extra hockey for the second time in as many nights, but couldn't come away with two points against Kalamazoo on Saturday night. Their 2-1 shootout loss dipped their record to 29-20-5 on the season.

The first period belonged to goalies Maxime Clermont and Joel Martin as they turned away all comers. The Jackals were far and away the more aggressive team with as they launched 14 shots Martin's way. At the other end of the ice Clermont saw eight shots sent his way, but Kalamazoo was unable to dent the net.

Martin's efforts in the first bared the first fruit as Tyler Shelast scored early in the second to break the scoreless deadlock. Aaron Clarke created a goal-mouth scramble by wrapping around from behind the net. Shelast went unchecked and was able to flutter a shot over Clermont's glove to give Kalamazoo the lead at 1-0. The Jackals continued to pepper away and tested Martin with 13 shots in the second. Again, however, each attempt the Jackals made was turned away by their former keeper.

In the third Kalamazoo went into a bubble and tried to rely on Martin to preserve the lead. The Wings attempted just three shots on goal and none were quality scoring attempts. Elmira, meanwhile, was firing at will again and their persistence finally paid off. After an offensive zone faceoff win, Andrew Rowe fed a pass to Cameron Cooper at the point. His dish went across the line to Jordon Southorn who blasted a one-timer home for his eighth goal of the season.

With neither team able to score over the final 4:13 after Southorn tied it, the game shifted to overtime. The Jackals had a chance to win it on a power play that began with 2:30 left in the extra stanza, but despite three shots they couldn't muster the go-ahead strike. So, for the second straight game, the Jackals had to rely on a shootout to settle the score. Nick Sirota was the only shooter to convert for Kalamazoo and Martin stopped all five Jackals to give the Wings the bonus point.

Clermont shouldered the loss while making 20 saves through regulation and overtime. The Jackals ended the game 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 0-for-4 on the power play.
