Schultz Ties League Scoring Mark; Wedgewood First Shutout in Titans
February 23, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
Trenton, N.J. - The Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, shut out Reading, 6-0, Saturday night at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton. The Titans defeated the arch-rival Royals, in their final meeting this year in Trenton, on the strength of four power play goals from Stephen Schultz and Scott Wedgewood's first professional shut out.
Trenton (21-26-4-4, 50 pts) started hot and never looked back. Schultz opened the scoring with a rocket from the left point into the near-side corner over the right shoulder of Brandon Anderson (8-6-0-1, 22 saves). Kelly Zajac earned an assist for setting up the power play tally. Schultz kept things rolling with another marker at 14:28, burying a loose puck out of a net-mouth scramble to double the Trenton lead. Jacob Cepis and Blake Kessel earned helpers on the play.
Schultz completed the natural hat trick in the second with another blast from the point at 6:48, also on the power play. Three wasn't enough for Schultz, who rifled home another to give the Titans the 4-0 lead at the end of two periods. Schultz now has 20 goals on the season, 13 of which have come on the power play - the team high. Conor Goggin (7) and Jacob Cepis (16) added goals in the third to end any hopes of a Royal comeback. Wedgewood backstopped the win with 29 saves to improve to 16-19-3-2 on the season. Eastern Conference leader Reading falls to 35-15-3-3 on the season with the loss.
The Titans continued their domination of Reading in special teams, cashing in on 4-of-7 power play opportunities and stopping all four Royals extra-man chances. Trenton has now shut down Reading's last 47 power play attempts, and have killed off 53-of-55 Royals power plays this season. Schultz also helped the Titans snap a four-game streak without a power play goal.
With the win, the Titans improve to 6-6-0-1 against Reading, and will meet the Royals again tomorrow afternoon in Reading at 4:05 pm. As always, those games can be heard on the flagship station 107.7 FM The Bronc, or online at 1077thebronc.com with the voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos.
