Redbirds Drop Road Trip Opener
June 15, 2021 - International League (IL) - Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds had a tough start to a two-week-long road trip, falling to the Indianapolis Indians (Triple-A affiliate, Pittsburgh Pirates) by a 6-1 final on a perfect night for baseball at Victory Field.
Indianapolis (19-17) put pressure on Zack Thompson early in his start, plating a run in the first and two more runs in the second. The Indians officially chased Thompson, the former first-rounder, in the fourth when they pushed another run across. Will Craig was the biggest nuisance for Thompson, driving in two runs in the second with a single and another run in the fourth with an RBI double.
Thompson's outing had the potential to be a lot better. The lefthander racked up five strikeouts and only allowed five hits in 3.2 innings. However, he couldn't seal the deal late in his innings. Each of the Indians' four runs against him came with two outs. Thompson also issued five walks in 22 batters faced.
Memphis (15-22) scored its only run of the game in the fifth via an RBI triple from Irving Lopez. The 'Birds were rendered mute at the plate for much of the night by Indy's pitching staff, which surrendered just three hits and seven base runners during the entire game.
Indianapolis tacked on runs in the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach. Anthony Alford had a notable night for the home team, reaching four times (hit by a pitch, two walks and a single) and scoring three runs.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
