Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
(Worcester, MA) - For the first time this season the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (18-19) find themselves under .500 as they lost to the Worcester Red Sox (24-13) 10-1 on Tuesday evening. The IronPigs managed just five hits - all singles.
IronPigs starting pitcher Adonis Medina (3-4) struggled as he only lasted four innings. He gave up five runs off seven hits and issued three walks without striking out a batter. The WooSox scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jonathan Arauz hit an RBI single to score Johan Mieses and Josh Ockimey hit a two-run home run.
The lone run of the game for Lehigh Valley came in the top of the third inning. Scott Kingery scored on a fielding error by WooSox right fielder Marcus Wilson. Worcester was able to score two more runs in the bottom of the third inning against Medina to take a 5-1 lead. Francy Cordero hit an RBI double to score Wilson and Jeter Downs hit an RBI single to score Cordero.
Arauz hit a two-run single against Bryan Mitchell in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend Worcester's lead to 7-1. Cordero added a two-run double against Jeff Singer in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the WooSox a 9-1 lead. Arauz struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning by hitting a sacrifice fly off David Paulino to score Downs and extend Worcester's lead to 10-1.
Raynel Espinal (6-1) earned the win by striking out seven batters over five innings. He allowed just one run off three hits and three walks. The IronPigs and WooSox play on Wednesday evening at 6:35 p.m. from Polar Park.
