Redbirds Drop Another Tight One to Gwinnett
July 31, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds continued their week of close baseball games at AutoZone Park against the Gwinnett Stripers (Triple-A affiliate, Atlanta Braves) in front of 5,064 fans on Saturday night. This time, the Stripers squeaked out a 2-1 win. Each of the first five games in the six-game series has been decided by just a run.
Memphis (38-39) got on the board early when Scott Hurst hit a solo home run to right-center field leading off the bottom of the third inning. It was Hurst's second dinger of the season and his first at AutoZone Park.
Gwinnett (40-37) answered right back and took the lead with a two-out, two-run double from Travis Snider in the top of the fourth. Johan Camargo and Yolmer Sanchez scored on the Snider double - they have scored a combined nine runs in the first five games of the series.
From there, pitching for both teams ruled. Johan Oviedo tossed a solid five-inning start for the Redbirds, allowing just the two runs in five innings with five hits and four strikeouts. Following Oviedo, the 'Birds bullpen was just outstanding. Tyler Webb, Grant Black, Connor Jones and Seth Elledge combined to throw 4.0 scoreless innings with two walks, four strikeouts and only two hits allowed.
Unfortunately for Memphis, the Gwinnett pitching staff was nearly unhittable all night. Six different pitchers allowed just three hits in the game, yielding zero walks while racking up nine strikeouts. 21 of the last 24 batters for the Redbirds were set down in order.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
