Buffalo Bisons News Release

A bases-clearing double from Jake Cave in the seventh inning and a 6-hit, 11 strike-out performance from the trio of starter Sean Poppen and relievers Fernando Romero and Ryan Eades was enough for the Red Wings to win game two of their weekend series against the Buffalo Bisons, 7-2, Saturday night at Frontier Field.

Coming off the heroics with last night's walk-off single, Cave's timely two-out hit came on the sixth pitch of his at-bat against Bisons reliever William Ouellete, moments after he came in for Joey Pulido, allowing Drew Maggi, Nick Gordon and Zander Wiel to score for the go-ahead 5-2 lead. This was followed up in the next at-bat when Brent Rooker connected for his own RBI double. In the win, the Red Wings scored five of their seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined.

Before being credited with the three runs in this sequence, Pulido did better than his final stat-line indicated when he came in relief for starter Conor Fisk in the fifth inning. Making his Triple-A debut after arriving from Single-A Lansing earlier in the day, the former draft pick out of the University of Houston quickly got out his first two batters with a line-out and a three-pitch strikeout against LaMont Wade Jr. before Zander Wiel launched his eighth home run of the season to tie the game at 2.

Credited with the loss, Pulido finished his debut with 28 of his 41 pitches as strikes in 2.2 innings of work, allowing 3 hits and 4 runs while striking out two batters and allowing a walk.

While Rochester scored first Friday night, it was the Herd who drew first blood in the second inning. After reaching base on an infield error, Jordan Patterson advanced to third base following Reese McGuire's walk and Andy Burns' fielder's choice ground-out. Then, on the first pitch of Roemon Fields' at-bat, Patterson crossed home on a wild pitch from Poppen for the 1-0 lead. This lead wasn't for long, though, as Randy César scored on a sacrifice ground-out from Tomas Telis to tie the game at 1.

The Herd struck back in the third inning. Facing a 2-1 at-bat with 2 outs, Teoscar Hernández sent the ball into the abyss into deep centerfield for a recorded 429-foot home run for the Herd's 2-1 lead. His fourth home run of the season, the designated hitter now has 10 RBI on the season and came off a multi-hit game against the Red Wings Friday night.

Fisk improved as the night went on. After walking his first two batters in the first inning, Fisk responded with three consecutive strikeouts to end the frame. The rest of his night, Fisk only walked one more batter and added a pair of strikeouts to end the second and third innings to finish with five total. He also only allowed two hits but walked three hitters, eating up his pitch count quickly as he finished with 73 pitches (42 strikes).

His first win of the season, Romero appeared in the sixth inning for the Red Wings and struck out two batters in his two innings of work and allowed two hits. Eades added another four strikeouts in the final two innings. Poppen struck out five and walked three with Buffalo's two runs counting against him in five innings of work, throwing 92 pitches (52 strikes).

The Herd wraps up their Thruway Cup weekend with a 1:05 first pitch at Frontier Field on Sunday. Sean Reid-Foley will take the mound for Buffalo while Kohl Stewart aims to lead the Red Wings to a series sweep.
