Louisville Bats News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Louisville Bats (23-32) lost to the Norfolk Tides (23-20) by a score of 8-7 in the second game of the series, ending a three-game win streak. The Bats will go for their second series win in a row on Sunday.
Louisville started strong, beginning the scoring in the second inning courtesy of a Nick Longhi shot beyond the left field bleachers at Harbor Park. The Bats have now scored first in each of their last four games.
The Bats kept the hot hitting going in the third when Alberti Chavez and Scott Schebler hit back-to-back singles. Rob Refsnyder would add another single, scoring Chavez from third. Schebler would also come in to score on a sacrifice fly from Brian O'Grady to make the score 3-1. Louisville continued the scoring in the sixth, plating another run to increase the lead. That run was the final straw for Norfolk starter Keegan Akin (3-2, 4.02). The four runs by the Bats are the most any team has managed against Akin all season.
Bats starter Vladimir Gutierrez (2-4, 7.64) was spectacular, allowing only two hits in 6.0 innings. The only run he surrendered came on a solo homerun, making it the fewest runs he has given up all season. The Bats relievers would give up four runs in the bottom of the seventh to give Norfolk a 5-4 lead, but Nick Longhi grabbed the lead back, launching a two-run homer in the eighth. He now has nine homeruns on the season, already topping his previous best mark of seven.
The lead went back and forth over the next two frames, with Louisville tying the score at 7 in the top of the ninth. However, with one out in the bottom of the inning, Ryan Mountcastle hit a walkoff homerun off Jimmy Herget to seal the loss for the Bats, who are now 2-5 in walkoff games on the season.
The Bats stay in Virginia for the decider in the three-game series versus the Tides on Sunday, with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. Recently acquired left hander Eric Stout will make his debut for the Bats, and he will match up against Norfolk righty Luis Ortiz (1-5, 7.26).
