Indians Rally Late But Fall in 10 Innings, 7-6

June 1, 2019 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indians hit three home runs to overcome an early 3-0 deficit and Will Craig tied the game with an RBI single in the ninth, but the Tribe couldn't finish the comeback in a 7-6, 10-inning loss to Gwinnett on Saturday night. Indy put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the extra frame but the Stripers hung on to even the series.

After the Indians (31-21) sent the game to extras on Craig's clutch hit off Chad Sobotka (W, 1-0), the Stripers (32-23) moved back in front in the 10th on an Adam Duvall double to the left-center gap. One out later, Alex Jackson stung a grounder inside first base down the right field line for a run-scoring single.

The extra run proved to be an important one for Gwinnett. Wes Parsons (S, 1) quickly retired the first two men he faced in the bottom of the 10th, but both Trayvon Robinson and Ke'Bryan Hayes poked two-out singles on 1-2 pitches, the latter bringing home Jason Martin to make it 7-6. Robinson took third on Hayes' soft flare, and moments later, Hayes stole second base. Nick Franklin, inserted as a defensive replacement for the rehabbing Corey Dickerson, battled during a nine-pitch at-bat before striking out to end the game.

Gwinnett jumped on Cam Vieaux for three runs in the first, one coming on a Ryan LaMarre RBI double and two more on a homer by Jackson. Martin put the Tribe on the board with a laser to the right field berm in the second, his fifth blast of the season.

Two innings later, the Indians tied the game on an Eric Wood opposite-field, two-run homer. The long ball was the 34th of his Indy career.

The visitors answered with a long ball of their own in the fifth to retake the lead, 5-3. Andres Blanco put his eighth dinger into the center field bushes.

Jake Elmore inched Indy closer in the eighth with a solo home run that cut the deficit to one.

Sean Keselica (L, 1-3) suffered the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) in the 10th.

The Tribe matched a season high by leaving 12 runners on base. Indy outhit Gwinnett, 14-11.

The Indians and Stripers wrap up their weekend series on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. ET. Mitch Keller (5-0, 3.45) will start for Indianapolis.
